Cool DIY Acomplishments.
This is a thread to post about your cool DIY doings. Talk about how you did what you did and post pictures if you want. Share ideas, ask questions, and give constructive criticism.
I, for example, just compleated putting a spider web on my leather jacket. I made it from thin strips of an old white fishnet shirt. I pinned them all into shape on top of the left shoulder of the jacket so that it can be seen from the front, side, and back. I don't have any pictures of it, though. I'll post one when the whole jacket is complete which could take a while. I plan on painting the Sex Gang Children's running skeleton with the scyth on the back. |
I put a run in a pair of fishnets once.
Does that count? |
When I went to go & see The Mighty Bosh live, I decided I wasn't gonna fork out 20 pounds for some Boosh clothing, so I made some T-shirts.
http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/5...cmyklrgki6.jpg I used white fabric paint & jazzed upsome old black tee's with that skull design. I also did it to my handbag. Loads of people think they're actual official T-shirts ^_^ |
Um, I made a scarecrow.....a pretty gross looking one for my standards and for the materials I had. And ummmmm, yeah I know it's not exactly clothing, but still a DIY project. I'll explain later when I have a picture of it.
|
My wardrobe is about 40% DIY projects... and if you've seen my wardrobe, 40% amounts to a LOT.
Yesterday I finished my masterpiece though, which was a black velour jacket with 18th century 3/4 sleeves with lace cuffs, and frog clasps down the front (I swear those are THE most masochistic clasps ever invented, but they're oh-so-pretty). I'll post pictures later today. Then there's also a whole heap of velvet, velour and lace skirts, and every top I own I've altered in some way, and I've made about half entirely from scratch. And how could I forget all my stockings? Not a single pair has escaped the attack of the scissors/fingernails (very handy for making runs in them!). I really am quite a DIY maniac. I just don't feel the same sense of accomplishment or individuality when I wear something I bought from a shop. |
I'm really big on DIY as well. Not only is it fun to work through different projects, but you get a sence of even more individuality because you are the only person with something like that (unless its simple or you knew that someone else did it before and you wanted one too or something). I have a pair of black jeans that I cut holes into all the way up the front of the leg to about mid-thigh and slashed up the bottoms of the pant legs into tatters. I wear fishnets under them and it looks rather nice. It was a simple project, but I still like how it looks. I also recently added a fully customized Theatre of Hate patche onto my leather jacket. My fingers are still in pain from pushing safety pins through thick leather.

Though it isn't done yet I guess I'll show my jacket as of now.

jacket looks FAB........love DIY clothes have always gone the DIY route here are my tips.........
Buy mega cheap jeans off Ebay and then tie dye them with bleach then dye them purple, red, green what ever pleases you!! machine dyes are better, you could also bleach certain areas and then dye them. buy cheap iron transfers of bands, cartoons ect, tranfer them on to sturdy material, then get some cool fabric IE spider webs, Bats and tack the transfer on to the fabric and then on to tshirt, i have a ruby gloom t shirt done that way and it looks ace!!! |

Hahaha. I painted that on thie myself and it didn't take that long either. I love it.

I've made these hair falls:

Wow how do you make fake...hair...stuff...Lol, amazing?
I just read this thread and remembered i have an old pair of jeans that were given to me so i got them out and literally ripped them apart...im wearing them now, from top to bottom its just rips, holes everywhere :p Im going to wear stripey tights underneath:D The last piece i customized was an old navy jacket which i put lots of spikes all over one shoulder, with 5 long ones poking out from the top of it. also covered the jacket with safety pins and painted an inverted pentagram on the back. |
Some of my DIY accomplishments:
This outfit (sewing leather is a BITCH!!!) This costume (and the staff too!) Cyber-armguard-thingy and hoverboard Freaked out this suit jacket... (ignore the makeup--my skills were still young...) AWESOME dreadfalls, by the way... |
I'm in love.
|

I've had a few commission requests for copies of it, but I want this one to be one-of-a-kind. I've been thinking of doing one more similar, but with blue detailing on black. |
The leather one is rather lovely, even if it did give you awful blisters.
My DIY extends only as far as jewellery these days- mainly just velvet or lace chokers. I've stopped modding my jeans, since they've started to fall apart and I can't find cheap, comfy, pure black, plain jeans that fit well in very many places any more. why is a UK size 10 so bloody difficult to locate? I'll get up a few pics of my chokers once I've got a decent camera and brought a few from home or got started on some new ones. |
My sewing story. First time sewing anything ever was two days before halloween with my aunts on my kinky harem girl halloween costume. Auntie Shelly had to define baste. I basted. The thread fell out/broke/whatever. I then tried to sew tiny rings into fabric. It took one hour to sew two. -.- I have given up with handsewing. Is the sewing machine easier? However, I have all these clothing designs floating around my head I want to make so badly! I can't make them though! T.T

...also, get a "sewing bible". I recommend "Simplicity's Simply the Best Sewing Book", but only because that's the one I use. |

Excellent outfits, BlackButterfly!
And yes, sewing machines make sewing SO much easier. I complete in two hours what would usually take me a week of finger-pricking labour, all thanks to my precious 40-year-old machine. Besides sewing, I also used to do a lot of t-shirt painting using hand-cut stencils. Here are some examples: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...e/TheCure1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../Siouxsie1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...amsT-Shirt.jpg Most of them look a bit stretched out and worn, especially the Rozz Williams one which I fear may soon have to retire. I sort of gave up on stencilling once I realised how masochistic it was trying to cut out 4mm eyes using a stanley knife, and I won't even start on Robert Smith's hair... |
::gapes::*bwaaaaaah...*
You HAND-CUT those?!? Tell the truth... you're a deity, aren't you? I absolutely LOVE the font on the Siouxsie one, and there are no words for the others... ::resumes gaping:: |
I love to DIY when I have the time. I dont really have pics. I have a ton of nice, holey jeans that I did myself. I have a pair of armwarmers out of toe sox that lace red. i have a tube top that I made out of...get this...the leg of an old pair of pants, lol. They were my stretchy, emily the strange yoga pants, but they got a hole in the crotch easily,. so I cut the leg off right below the knee. I slashed holes down the front. My sister wears it with a red fishnet top, a bright blue tank and then the tube top. soo cute. I have more Iv done, but I cant think this morning.

I made custom Cinema Strange and Deadfly Ensemble shirts.
Wearing the Cinema Strange shirt in this one. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...rriandmatt.jpg Deadfly Ensemble shirt. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ed/Me/door.jpg I made both out of plain black shirts with the sleeves cut off and fabric paint. |
I *LOVE* the first pic--it looks like a painting, especially with the makeup.
The font's great on both tees; is that how you write on paper, or was it special for the shirts? |
Its just for the shirts. I copied the logos of the bands. I figure I'll never find ones like them so I'll just make what I'm looking for.
|
I agree with BlackButterfy; that first picture does look like a painting.
Here's a few of my recent DiY accomplishments: http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...o/100_1228.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...o/100_1224.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...o/100_1220.jpg |

Must I steal EVERYTHING from this thread?!
Draconysius and Haunted House, your jackets and t-shirts are mine. Awesome bands, and awesome artwork. |
The paint on my jacket hasn't cracked and it won't, either. The paint I used was really good and I covered it really thinly, but well.
Thank you, Cicero. I love to make my own stuff and knowing that people really like it tells me I did a good job. |
Cicero, I can't imagine how the bloody hell you made those shirt stencils so perfectly, but you should put those for sale, man! I'd probably give fifty bucks for the Rozz Williams shirt alone!
Oh, and thanks for the compliments! |
I'm almost done with this top...
I *LOVE* how it's coming along... but there are still a few mods I have left to make... I want to add detachable sleeves, and I'm trying to decide whether to use eyelets and lace to re-attach the bottom panel I cut off, or to say "screw the panel" and add layered ruffles using black lace fabric... I also want to use a different cross applique (sewn on and use the pins for accent--those pins are just for stability--it's not permanent yet...). Oh yeah, and paint-stencil some song lyrics onto it, but I'm worried that it'll be a bit too "busy"... ::hint fastball!!:: (suggestions are welcome...) It's all planned out here... but I'm so torn right now... ::agonizing:: I'll post pics of the finished top later (if I can finish it to my satisfaction)... |
Black Butterfly - I love that thing ^. Keep up the good work, and, in my opinion, keep the writing to a minimum ;)
At the moment I'm working on a pair of very long armwarmers; I've knitted the armwarmers and am busy crocheting laces a la 1800's fashion that trails along my fingers and peeks out of the jacket (if I'm wearing one). I'll post pictures when I've finished one of them. =) |
How about I send one of you fine people some clothing and let you do with it as you please, then generously send it back? :D
If I tried DIY work, I'd end up with a mess. I can't do anything of that nature :-/ |
For lyrics, how about Evangeline or In Denial by The Mission UK, or Sacrifice by London After Midnight, or Thirty Whacks by The Dresden Dolls.
They seem cool lyrics for a shirt. |

I thought I'd just keep this thread alive. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...o/100_1275.jpg

It's not much but I like it. I got the pretty little diamonte thing from my grandma and put it on some velvet ribbon. It does up at the back with press studs, I hate sewing them on but they work. I'll add some more stuff I've made tommorrow, my camera flash doesn't work very well so I need to take them outside. |

At the moment I'm knitting a scarf with a hole in the right lower length so that the wearer can just tuck the other end into the hole instead of making a knot; I will probably add some white lace from an old curtain to it for decoration on the ends. |
Speaking of DIY.... I can't sew. I can't draw. I have the fashion sense of a three week old moldly turnup. That said, I did manage to free myself from the shackles of sites like PhotoBucket by installing a Gallery on my own server. If anyone wants to set something like that up on their own server, and need help, I'd be happy to share how I did it.
I can't host such things for others, myself right now - too much disk space. This is NOT an advertisement for services. But I would be willing to help others set up their own, on their own servers. |
If I had my own server I would do that but unfortunately servers cost money and unemployed teenagers don't have money. :(
|
O man, I am so old. :-(
Quote:
I am so old. I really didn't need the reminder of how ancient I am. ON the bright side, I may not have a lot, but I DO have money. :-) |
hey, don't feel bad about the age thing. your not the only one :)
|
LOL - I love your sig, though I have to admit, the original is still the best - the original of course, was Gandalf the Grey, who said "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle, and quick to anger." :-)
|
You get cool points because you are old. Most people have outgrown their goth phase before they are 30, the fact that you're over 30 and just entering your goth phase is cool. Besides no one ever takes you seriously when you're a teenager, just because you're young you automatically know nothing. It sucks.
|
"You get cool points because you are old."
I can just see him thinking "Gee, thanks." Haha. |
