'Nice graphic textures in the colouring. CG sometimes has a "flat", artificial look to the shading that I don't care for, but you've avoided it nicely. Your method also blends well with the jagged, weighted lines in the illustration.

By the way, did you ever play any of SNK's "Samurai Showdown" series? Those games had some of the greatest character designs. One of these days, I'm definitely going to do a pen&ink illustration of Basara and Kagaribi.

Fire poi.... marry me, that shit is the coolest thing I have seen in a long time. Went to my first rave last weekend instead of going to see Germ Attak (pretty awesome local punk) by myself again. and damn was it fun.

I've played SS once or twice. I'll have to look into the games. See what's up.

Xombie - I've always wanted to do the fire twirling/breathing - it looks like so much fun! yeah the hair isn't bad but it needs re-doing.

Fruitbat 09-23-2010 09:18 PM

SinJ - this one is for you hun. This is my partner in crime. Babybat, who is disguised as Tigger from Winnie the Pooh.

Unlike his mother, babybat poses for photographs! He'd just finished shopping in the pantry and was flirting with me to open the box for him.

Kids get the best PJ's! It has a hood with little ears as well. I'll try and remember to take a picture tonight with the hood up.

It's pretty easy to do, but difficult to really do safely - rules of thumb only get you so far, even people that're good at it hurt themselves sometimes.

You'll want to be outside, pay attention to the direction of the wind (blow with it, not against it), not inhale both when the fuel's in your mouth and right after blowing. You'll want a non-toxic fuel that only catches fire when dispersed into a thin fog; most people prefer purified kerosene I think. You'll still want to not swallow it, but likely never succeed completely.

Now practise with water. Take half a mouthful, and blow it out through lips pressed close in such a way that it becomes a cloud of small water particles, with as few bigger drops as possible. This'll be easier with fuel later, but it's nice to practise with something non-nasty.

These clouds are what you'll want to aim at a burning torch held at least a foot and a half away from you, with the direction of the wind, aimed somewhere upwards where nothing can catch fire. Suited fuels don't ignite when they're big drops or liquid on your face, only when properly dispersed. Still, flames can blow back on you sometimes. If that happens, stop spitting fuel at them and don't inhale. Dodging is tertiary and likely won't help before the flames are already gone.

Did I miss anything important?

Yo SinJob!!
I want to send you a private message but I can't... Well i was going to PM you a link to a photo of the Fruitbat Family.

Well said. Also, make sure to keep the fuel in the front part of your mouth (use your tongue to block it off), because if you do accidentally inhale, you really don't want your throat to burn. When you're spitting, purse your lips like you're giving somebody a raspberry. It helps to just practice doing that without any liquid in your mouth.

Keep your head and chest at a slightly upward angle, and resist the urge to exhale so hard that your body pushes forward with it. Aaaaaand use your diaphragm more than your lungs.

After spitting, do not swallow or rinse your mouth out with water. Water will only move the remaining fuel around your mouth. Stick with soda or something else that's carbonated. No matter how hard you try not to swallow, you're going to be burping later and it will taste like fuel. Mmmmm.

P.S. I like using lamp oil; the spray is super fine and it doesn't really taste like anything.

Babybat and Georgie should have a playdate.

That sucks, does he believe the internet steals your soul once your picture is displayed? So did my sister, but I put hers up anyway haha

**SLURP***

the sound of the internet sucking the soul right out of me as I speak.

I'll have to wait until I get one that i look half decent in... might be waiting a long time..

Although if you google my real name you might find it - "What's my name again?" The kid no one wants to play with.

if the internet takes my soul SinJob - it's on your shoulders.

I hate having my photo taken.

This is so you don't think i'm some psycho old cow stalking you. Fuckit!

Oh yeah background to this photo - it had been a terrible night. I think I'd managed like 3 hours of broken sleep, hadn't even brushed my hair and I wanted a photo to remind me that I can indeed survive the hard times.

and the previous photo I uploaded was of my bicep.
