Dir en Grey?

Anyone heard of 'em? I got the recommendation from a friend of mine and they sound pretty good from what I've heard. They'd be considered somewhat screamo by American standards because of the "good-cop bad-cop" vocals, but maybe the Japanese have different rules, they're still pretty awesome.

That's not screamo.

Felreaper 02-17-2009 05:39 PM

Yeah, the more i listen, they're a lot of everything. I may have found a new obsession that would fit nicely next to my others.

PortraitOfSanity 02-17-2009 06:39 PM

They're part of that genre that X Japan is in. Kei something or another I think.

Definitely nowhere close to screamo.

viscus 02-17-2009 06:59 PM

Visual Kei. Popular with female junior high students.

I used to listen to Dir en grey, but then I realized they were just kind of a perversion of everything that was popular in the American Nu-Metal scene. They're pretty crazy though, a student of mine told me that they were fined once for putting on a TV performance that was deemed too grotesque.

Nexus-6 02-18-2009 03:45 AM

I've only heard one of their albums and quite liked it...though wish I knew what they were singing about lol.

Felreaper 02-18-2009 08:25 AM

My friend told me that at one point in a song they yell "Oh fuck, it's turkey man!"

Zakyath 02-18-2009 03:31 PM

Doesn't they sound like just any trash metal band these days? I liked their older material...

PortraitOfSanity 02-18-2009 06:19 PM

Too bad they're not metal at all. Now GTFO my music forum!

Draconysius 02-19-2009 10:21 AM

Dire 'n Ghey.

Devil's Darling 02-19-2009 02:12 PM

Dir en Grey are pretty good band. They also have lots of interesting ideas in videos such as "Obscure" or ''Zan''.

Necrophagist 02-19-2009 03:11 PM

Fixed :D I forgot the ''a'' and I couldn't edit the comment.

Any opinions on Genghis Tron? I happen to freakin' love them, but it seems that not everyone here would...

PortraitOfSanity 02-20-2009 06:50 AM

I love Genghis Tron. Who knew putting weird electronic noises in grindcore could be so fucking cool!

I don't see how they relate to the topic though....

Felreaper 02-20-2009 11:36 AM

I dunno...

I like Mana's look, but I don't really care for Dir en Grey's music.

Corpsey 02-23-2009 04:15 PM

Everyone likes Mana's look.

They're pretty good to listen to if you want some obscure background noise to contemplate things in some sort of thoughtless-rythm state of mind.

Felreaper 02-23-2009 04:28 PM

True, true...

exacerbatedpoet 02-23-2009 09:02 PM

I've heard some of Dir en Grey's music and its pretty awesome.

Vyvian Blackthorne 02-26-2009 11:12 AM

I like Dir en Grey, "Repetition of Hate" and some of their early-mid stuff is where it's at. They're a pretty decent band overall. For creativity I'd give them a 7 or 8, but I don't know about their consumer whore-isms...

I should hit myself for knowing this, but I'm pretty sure Mana is the front man for Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Mois, not Dir en grey.

Lurci 03-20-2009 10:14 PM

I like them but i think i like Moi Dix Mois more.

Appassionata 04-02-2009 07:03 PM

I really do enjoy them. I am not too into the J-Rock scene, but Dir En Grey will forever hold a special place in my heart. If you're looking for something rough and loud, check out "Byo Shin", "Obscure", or "The Final"; however, if you want something a bit more soft and acoustic, but still headbang-able, try listening to "Undecided". It is, without a doubt, my favorite Dir En Grey song.

Oh! & if you end up liking them, check out D'espairsRay.. they are very similar and even better.

ZyklonB 04-02-2009 07:24 PM

Yeah my ex used to have some kind of obsession with Visual Kei. I could never really get into it.
