Patchouli smells awesome. I think people just think they don't like it because their only experience with it is some super dirty hippy who decided that patchouli is an acceptable alternative to bathing (and not in an "oh I'm in a rush I don't have time for a shower today kind of way, I'm talking about months and months on end), really at that point nothing is going to totally cover the body odor, no matter how much you put on, and so people seem to think that a mix of patchouli and bo is what patchouli smells like.

My sister had no exposure to it before and thinks it smells gross. MEANIE.
