Man Accused of Making 2,623 Obscene Calls

Mar 8, 7:08 PM (ET)

COSHOCTON, Ohio (AP) - Authorities arrested a man accused of making thousands of harassing and obscene calls to random cell phone numbers in at least eight counties.

James R. Hood, 43, was charged with one count of compelling prostitution, or offering money for sex. He posted bond and was released from the Coshocton County jail, the sheriff's office said Wednesday.

Hood was arrested earlier this week following a joint investigation by sheriff's deputies in Coshocton and Licking counties. Hood lives in the Licking County town of Granville, about 25 miles east of Columbus.

Hood's phone records show he made 2,623 calls in 20 days, "all basically obscene in nature," Coshocton County deputy Brent McKee said.

The calls were made between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said.

Hood will either have a preliminary hearing this month or the case will be presented to a grand jury, Coshocton County Prosecutor Robert Batchelor said.

A stipulation of Hood's bond was that he can't use a telephone, cell phone or the Internet, McKee said.

That's mighty fucked up.

ExistentialDisorder 03-09-2006 06:29 PM

some people are just really fucking stupid. and bored, aparently.

Ok, quick maths... assuming they "work" 8 hours a day, not taking time off for lunch... that's a call every 4 mins, solid 9-5 for the full 20 days.

Now, on the one hand I'm thinking "that's a sick individual", on the other... I'm almost thinking that level of dedication deserves a round of applause and a medal.

ExistentialDisorder 03-09-2006 07:18 PM

uhm, that's not what the news article said, vorsuc - it says most of them were made between 2 and 3 am. so an hour of calling each nigt. sounds like somebody trying to get his rocks off before bed.

DarkIce 03-09-2006 11:52 PM

Vorsuc - youīre calculation differs from what I did discover.

He made calls from 2 to 3am. Thatīs one (1) hour of work per day. He has done this for 20 days.

1h * 20 = 20h of work (to achieve 2.623 calls)

20h / 2623 calls = about 27 sec/call.

Depending on how fast he dialed the random numbers thereīs something like maybe 20 sec left to argue with the victims...

This guy surely didnīt get happy by what he was doing. I doubt he found someone who actually agreed to his proposal *haha*

He should have tried to reach me on my cellphone:

Mmmh. The number is +43 5555 1234 ;-)

Surely the phone bill would be punishment enough. International calls to mobile phones aren't cheap. Maybe he was using his work phone?

20 seconds sounds more like the time it would take me to hang up on this freak.

WolfMoon 03-10-2006 05:49 AM

You can say a lot in 20 seconds, actually. It normally takes me about 1.2 seconds to hang up on a prank caller.

This reminds me of something that happened a couple months ago at work.

*ring-ring*

me:CVS Photo, can I help you?

weirdo:Yeah, I was wondering what kind of pictures you guys develope there?

me:We develope all kinds, sir.

weirdo:I have some pictures I was wondering if you could develope there.

me:As long as it's just nude and no one is touching each other we can develope them.

weirdo:They're of me and my wife. Would you like to see them?

me:No.

weirdo:really?

me:*click*

*Note* If we ever get rolls with a bunch of naked kids or nude photos of someone of 'questionable' age, we are required to turn the person over to the police. I never tell people that over the phone, though. If someone is stupid enough to be out there handing me kiddie porn to develope, you're damn skippy I'll turn their sick asses in.

ExistentialDisorder 03-11-2006 02:26 AM

hehe. interesting, wolfmoon. I thought nudes weren't allowed to be developed at all, even when they're solo shots. maybe its a store-by-store thing? the wal-marts here will remove any photos from your prints that show any kind of nudity at all. but i think they'll still let you keep the negatives. but it's been years since i had any film developed. digital cameras are so much more convenient.

Makes you wonder if most Walmarts have a "collection" of such photos kept in the back, that get loaned out at weekends to various members of staff.
