I think it would depend on the design of the coat. I think clothes wise its best to start with a simple skirt, dress or t shirt type top and work your way up.
Collars can be particularly difficult. Plus you'd probably have to line it, which is also tricky, plus there is the problem of finishing the front of it.
You'd have to use a material suitable for the pattern, I usually ask when I buy the fabric.
