Once you become an adult, this idea is more par for the course, and less something you actually feel the need to prove to others.
I. E., the older you get, the less you actually, really care what others think. [With the exception of a few individuals.] When you still feel the need to say "I don't care what you think!", it's still evidence that yes, actually, you do.
Once that need disappears, and you just -are- yourself without having to -declare- it,
then you are truly being yourself...whether that's a Gap-wearing 'conformist', or a spooky cyberGoth from the underground, or [as usually happens] an odd hybrid between the two.
