I think people can attribute luck to whatever they feel comfortable with.
"Gee. I lost my job in the latest round of layoffs. God/Karma must be punishing me for ignoring that homeless guy."
And on the flip side, "Gee. Someone offered me a job that's better than the last one. God/Karma must be rewarding me for helping my friend out of a difficult situation."
