I think it's easier than other second languages for an English speaker. At my school the majority of people seemed to pick French and Spanish on the basis that they were easier than German which I'll never understand.
I can't really remember anything now but even back then I didn't find movies very useful for learning because they spoke way too fast for me. Rammstein actually sing really clearly and slowly, not that they sing much you'd ever say in a conversation. Sometimes we watched the german dub of The Simpsons in lessons, I think it even had Homer singing the American national anthem with german lyrics.
