I think a better approach would be to see if they can't watch the programs that they like but that annoy you away from you or at a lowered volume. And advise them it's in both your interests to reach a compromise, or the logical conclusion will be you playing Sisters of Mercy (or whatever music you choose) at full volume on the stereo every time they're watching that show loud enough to annoy you.
