It is true, there was a major study done a few years ago where the moms were asked to read a specific book every day for the last month of their pregnancy. After the babies were born (I think a week or so after birth) they were placed in a room and given these special pacifiers that controlled what the headphones they were wearing played (depending on the rate they sucked). One group was given the chance to choose between a recording of their mother reading the book and a stranger reading the same book, no surprise they picked their mother's voice. The other group was able to choose between their mother reading a different book and a stranger reading the book that had been read to them, the majority of the babies picked the stranger reading the book that had been read to them. Yay for the fun things you learn in developmental psych

I think that the concept of being "born goth" only arose after goth had peaked. All the original goths would have found it difficult to be born into a subculture as yet unimagined.

Although, if we're talking about the REAL goths, then you would have been born a goth, or at least a Visigoth or whatever.

That's being raised in a goth environment. Not really being born.

I guess it depends... A person can totally change during childhood and early adolescent, they could become Goths. I believe I was born one, I have always liked some aspects of Goth culture, but... There might be some out there who didn't and started to like it later in their lives.

First of all, I still don't believe that Gothic is a unified theme. So I'm going to go off on a tangent about how I perceive things.

I don't believe anyone is born "Gothic." Outside of the fact that I consider it a radically generalizing misnomer and that certain psychological traits are inherited, but I think that it has more to do with an inherent human curiosity that piques a specific interest. Some people are raised being able to identify with a certain culture, however much a lack of ethics it maintains, and some end up being drawn towards more morbid things because... I don't know. Your favorite song in the Brave Little Toaster was "Worthless."

I don't believe humans are born anything except humans, really.

Sorry don't have a link, it is out of my text book, I can give you the bibliographic info on the book if you would like. Oh and the book that the mother's read while there were pregnant was The Cat in the Hat and the other book used was Red Fish Blue Fish, in case anyone was curious.

This is why I'm rather dreadfully tired of the whole goth thing.

No offense or anything.
