If anything, the public is MORE educated today than they were when Melville and the like were writing.
Pretty much everyone goes to college these days, and has at least a B.A. so once again I don't think these authors popularity is due to "ill-education"
I think their popularity is due to the fact that we as a society NEED great artists, and when there aren't any around we pretend like the good or mediocre artists are great.
