Yea, most of his stuff I've considered mediocre at best, his Batman movies were ok, but he got points off because they're not at all like the comics.

Yeah, but the films had a very distinct Burton feel to them, and he puts a lot of metaphors into his film. With Nolan, Catwoman would have had a massive speech about how she is confused and torn between mental extremes, and all that, and it would've been lovely and eloquent and we would've all liked it, but Burton just gets her to patchily put together her outfit, symbolising her confusion and mental unrest, and the fact that it's a costume representing that she's trying to communicate this unrest to others.
There's plenty more examples than that in Burton's films. I prefer Nolan's films greatly. But Burton has a few things over on Nolan, and they're certainly two different approaches to film.
