That, and the fact N. Korea can barely feed their army, let alone build up a sizable invasion force to get across the Pacific. Whoever wrote the upcoming film (not to mention the original '85 one) had no clue what the U.S. military's really capable of. I was actually laughing pretty loudly when I saw the previews when I went to see "Looper" a few weeks ago.

Fun Fact: The movie is actually about the PLA, but was changed to North Korea in post-production. Your point is still valid, though.

I heard about that but wasn't sure if anyone else knew about it. The rumor I heard why there was a last minute change was because the studio didn't want to upset a sizable chunk of the world's viewing audience compared to one of the most isolated countries in the world.

Edit: I also can't wait for the lulz from the conspiracy nuts on this one, especially the resident one here on Gnet. I think it's going to be a good one.

It reminds me of how in Deer Hunter they had the Vietnamese dress like WW2 Japanese soldiers, because the Yellow Peril is the Yellow Peril is the Yellow Peril, right?

Exactly. Hollywood's been pulling that crap off for years. For instance, in "Apocalypse Now" the tribe Col. Kurtz lived with weren't Vietnamese, they were an indigenous tribe of the area in the Philippines they shot the film in. Which I found strange later on, having met several children of Vietnamese refugees who settled in the Philippines and various other places around the Pacific after the war ended there. At least in "Platoon" they used former South Vietnamese regulars for the NVA.

There is a brilliant documentary called Reel Injun which talks about the way that Hollywood does that.

I only found it by accident after looking for more of John Trudell's poetry... which is fucking brilliant, if you're ever looking for someone to read.

There was a part of the film where they were talking about an old black & white film where the director just told the actors to talk.. and then the white actor would say his line and then the Native American actors would speak again. Years later they had the dialogue from the Native American actors translated and they were saying things like "You're treating us like we're idiots and fools... well, look who the foolish one is here..."

I thought that was ballsy.

If the movie had to change the PLA to N. Korean military; then that fact should surely be known. It is good to know and a bit relieving that the studio felt it couldn't get away with demonizing the PLA.

Here's what the poster for the movie was supposed to look like originally:

And here's and article when it was originally the PLA complete with pics during production:

http://www.chinasmack.com/2009/pictu...reactions.html

And courtesy of the Telegraph in the UK why it was changed:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/f...h-Koreans.html

I doubt whoever put the film in production thought it all of the way through originally.

That's too funny. It really is a shame most Westerners aren't as well versed in the Far Eastern languages as they are in Western European.

It would have been sad but there were a bunch of Chi Lings in the theater who giggled every time they hear a Chinese word.

No I don't.

from what I've seen of it,the movie is just another remake that tarnishes the memory of the original film.

It doesn't have the same depth of character as the 1984 film.

It's just another sad attempt by hollywood to rake in money by cashing in on the name of the original film without the underlying story and character that made the first one so memorable and worth watching.

I feel that the same fate is in line with the Evil Dead re-make,and I weep that such will happen to a damn good (even though campy at times) film.

Don't laugh too hard China does have the largest military force in the world at this time with 2.3 million active troops, not counting reserve troop numbers.

We had 1.4 million on active duty in '04.

Never underestimate a potential enemy.

Just sayin'

(Continues laughing)

Oh, it's quite obvious you clearly know dick about the modern military and it's capabilities. Troop numbers alone doesn't guarantee a powerful military force first off. There are numerous examples in history where numerically superior forces were defeated by a smaller more disciplined force. Hell, you point out one of the examples in your quotations. There's also the problem of logistics, something few armchair generals like yourself ever contemplate. To get to the U.S. West Coast, they'd first have to take out the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and several U.S. owned islands in the Pacific. Add in the fact that China lacks the resources the U.S. has, and they'd quickly find themselves in the same situation the Japanese put themselves in during WWII.

Then there's the economic situation. Next to Japan, we're their best customer. From the computer you're reading this on to the chair you're sitting in to the shoes you're wearing, chances are they have "Made in China" written on the tags; plus we owe them a shit load of money for the war in Iraq and several projects built around the states. Why would they invade one of their best customers? That's like a coke dealer shooting the movie star because the film producer just bought an extra ounce of yeyo. It would be commercial suicide for them.

But go ahead, keep day dreaming about being some guerrilla war hero while you shoot tin cans all day. I find paranoid survival nuts like yourself more amusing than Mel Brooks making cheap shots at Nazis.

One word: Navy. Nevermind that the US military has hundreds of thousands of combat veterans in inactive reserve.
