Pi

Pi is an irrational number. Thus its decimal representation is infinite.
If its decimal representation is infinite, then there are an infinite number of digits in pi after the decimal.

Imagine we gave numbers an alphanumeric value, such that A=1 and B=2 and yes even M=13 meaning if there's a 1 followed by a 3 it can be taken as M or as AC.
If the numbers in the decimal or pi are infinite, then there must be a section within pi that, if we followed the alphanumeric value assigned, would read the whole work of Don Quixote, wouldn't it?

Can someone tell me what is wrong with this idea?

Well, for one, most people wouldn't know Don Quixote if it bit them on the ass...

For two, perhaps irrational numbers produce irrational thoughts in people?

Well.. First off, you have way too much spare time.

Secondly, unless you mean that all the letters of these works you mentioned are randomly mashed up in Pi, I doubt there will be a section of Pi that makes them out perfectly quoted.

But if it is infinite then there are infinite possibilities

I suppose that is true. But how do we know that it is infinite?

I was going to say this at first, but I honestly think that Jill would make time to ponder things like this.

I have to show that pi pic to my math teacher, I think she'll get a kick out of it.

It implies that Don Quixote equals pi.

Actually it is very possible:

Don Quixote = ~500,000 words
(500,000 multiplied times the number of combinations of same words) times (number letters and punctuation, spaces and numbers)*(combinations of same characters) =
1 chance in a little over 4 quadrillion (4 thousand trillion) that Don Quixote would be spelled out. That is less than infinity.

But I must warn you: this is exponentially far greater than the number of grains of sand on an average beach (512,000,000,000):

http://www.6footsix.com/my_weblog/ho...of-sand-i.html

You could pick up one by one every grain of sand on a typical beach and not find that story.

So to put it in human terms, it is for all practical purposes impossible to find that string of Don Quixote in your brief lifetime. But it exists, theoretically.

...unless someone buried a copy of the story on the beach.

This makes me hope that somebody somewhere will build a super-computer to just run pi and churn out epic novels the likes of which the world has never seen.

Complete works of fiction created by nothing but math.

Imagine the possibilities. Maybe by doing this, math itself will become a sentient entity, and take over the world.

The robot uprising is coming, and it's all because Alan took a break from hentai and decided to post about Pi on Gnet.

Impossible. To get something out of an infinite series with no pattern, you'd first need to know what you're looking for. It's like looking at figures in clouds except more precise.

This is precisely the implication of Borges' Library of Babel. If you have an infinite library with infinite books with all possible combinations, then there are infinite copies of, say, Charles Dickens' books, and how would you decide which is the best version between "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" and "They were the best of times, they were the worst of times" unless you already had the idea of which would be the best.
If you find a meaningful sequence without a pattern, it's only because you already had presumed the meaningfulness of such a sequence.
