Yarns and Threads

I realize the title of this threads sounds as if I want you to start threads to tell us stories...heh...anyway I actually meant it literally. I noticed a "Sewing your own clothes" type thread in the fashion forum, and it made me think of this...

I've just recently taken up crocheting and a little bit of needle point, and I have several friends who knit. I was wondering if anyone else does any of these things.

Right now, I'm finishing up a round quilt for a friend of light blue, white, black and bright orange, with a large piece of needle point with the same colors in the center depicting the paperback cover of David Foster Wallace's "Infinite Jest." After that, I'm making a zig-zag afghan for my boyfriend and I'm thinking of doing some old-fashioned Medieval embroidery for him as well, as he is a Medievalist and loves that kind of thing. I'm also thinking of doing a large piece of the same thing, only depicting our travels and such, much like the Bayeux Tapestry depicts the story of William the Conquerer.

Anyone else?

I crochet scarves... Mostly just to occupy my hands. It's very soothing. I've done enough that I can just crochet without thinking about it, and since I don't have to count stitches or anything, I can do it in class, or while I watch TV.

I highly recommend this yarn. It's big, so you can make things quickly, and it comes out uber soft.

That it is. I do it in bed, half watching the news--it soothes me while the world does it's best to piss me off.

I can crochet, but don't very often. What I do is card weaving. Is something a little different, and I can make up my own patterns. I started learning to spin and weave when I was about eleven, and they are still things I enjoy quite a bit. I love to use the suede type yarns, even though they are so expensive. The soft feel combined with the jewel tones you can get in this type of yarn make projects feel so luxurious, both while you are working with them and the finished project afterwards.

I can needlepoint but don't do it often cause I don't like it very much. I always wanted to learn to knit and crochet but my mom doesn't have enough time to teach me and my gran is on a better place sho she can't teach me either.
And where I live we don't have any craft courses so now would be good time for you to tell me if there are some decent on-line courses.

I both knit and crochet, but much prefer knitting (crocheting makes me horribly impatient). At the moment I'm working on a knee- length knitted dress made out of a flamecoloured yarn (it's multicoloured; several shades of red and yellow).

This might help you.

Start with the last link on the page(How to cast on stiches).

I don't sew, but I dye, paint, cut, rip, safety-pin, and glue! Heck, I just got finished randomly splattering permanent red fabric dye on a white t-shirt. Of course, I'm intending this to look like a blood-stained shirt. Anyway, I take great passion in my clothing making. Even if it's not done with pins and needles, it's still art to me.

its cool you can get creative without following the traditional crafts. besides, projects probably come together a bit faster, too.
