Meh, when I was in high school (Currently in marines) The school wouldnt let me have a mohawk,eyeliner or anything. They would take away my edgar Allan poe books. And it all happened because a silly fucknut parent said I was in a Satanic cult.

1. Because I'm usually not accepted by ANYONE unless I lie about who I am. I learned that in 1st grade when I was the kid who would sit alone in the corner.

I'll probably get a bit of backtalk from the high school aged kids here, but I really think uniforms in schools are the best way to go. As one of my friends put it, "uniforms even out the playing field; you can be a beautiful and unique butterfly when you're in college." You can also dress however you like at home, or on your own free time.

I know this is a difficult concept for some kids, but your clothes are NOT you. (hehe, "you are not your khakis") you are not your eyeliner, you are not your platform boots. Although it's certainly fun to dress how you want, and it communicates to others some basic things about you: what music you probably listen to, what type of personality you have...it's still not quite the tragedy that you make it out to be, if you're not allowed to wear it in school.

And this is coming from a 20 year old.

It's not like I've forgotten how much high school sucked, yet.

I agree with you Xng. Since I have to wear a uniform to school, I've noticed that there are minor details that differenciate students. For instance, popular kids have short skirts that barely cover their legs; oppositely, "geeks" or 'nerds" have knee- lengthed skirts or even taller and they tuck their shirts under them... I'll post some pics of my school, if you want, to prove it.

I agree with Xnguela and with Panic. On one hand the uniform does minimize the fashion battle that can occur in schools. But as an ex-attendee of a school where we were required to wear a uniform, I can say that it only minimizes the effect. As Xnguela and Queenofdarkness57 said, there are ways to twist and manipulate your uniform to express your "individuality", or perhaps "allegiance" would be the more appropriate phrase.

We had a very, very strict code that included what we wore on the way to and from school, and it was enforced mercilessly. One of the teachers took it upon herself to ensure we wore the correct coat, and would sit at the doorway and try and catch people. She would even hound kids who weren't wearing a coat, accusing them of hiding their "contraband" apparel in their bags.

But still the kids managed to make their different allegiances apparent.

I find that, even now, in college, kids wear a "uniform" of sorts. It's not enforced, but people that run in similar circles tend to dress in similar fashions. For example, the students who fancy themselves to be more "urban" will all wear a sports jersey, colorful shorts, a baseball cap, and flashy name brand sneakers. Not an IDENTICAL dress, but all pulled from the same "urban" template. The same can be said for "preps" and "goths" and "nerds". You can go on listing social groups ad infinitum, and it holds true. Even the "scenesters", who will profess to the ends of the Earth their originality, all adhere to a code of style. I'm sure that, although I'm truly loathe to admit it, if I look were to look hard enough I'd be able to find some style cliche that I resemble. We can't escape it! Uniforms are EVERYWHERE!

But Pinstripes, you're talking about styles, not really uniforms.

As for schools and uniforms, in one of my schools, they tried to make us wear uniforms. I was 8 or 9 at the time. I refused to wear it, and so did some other kids. The teachers tried to make us, but gave up after a while.
