Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Cinema Strange
I didn't see a thread about my new favorite band (ok... for about two months, really) so I wanted to start a thread. As seems to be the custom for thread starting as of late
*ehem*
TEY 4R3 DA K00LL BANDZORXXXXX I <3 DEM!! WHOOOOO!!!
Anyway, they're full of melodic beauty, the lead singer has a charming voice (if you're me, you think Peter Murphy crossed with some indescribible something is charming), and the guitar, bass, piano and everything else is simply stunning. They also are one of those rare balances between hilarity and horror.

This is an interesting page with links to similar bands and such.

Have you heard them? What do you think?

I LOOOOOOOOVVVVEEEE.
Sadist Sagittarius is one of my favourite songs ever. And Greensward Grey. I think I just love them all. Though I must admit, it was partially the liner notes of The Astonished Eyes of Evening that got me hooked:
"Lafitte, he is sneaky.
Zampano is king of the circus.
Yellow likes haddock"
They're all so beautiful, too. Oh man, I could go on and on about Cinema Strange.
Wonderful signature, by the way. Cinema Strange lyrics truly are some of the best.

Heh, thanks.
Yeah, I love that little booklet, too. my favorite one is "Yellow likes haddock... but haddock doesn't like him"

Haha, yeah. When I made the post I forgot about the small print at the bottom of the page.
The correct version:
"Lafitte, he is sneaky... but he always gets caught.
Zampano is king of the circus... but it is a very small circus.
Yellow likes haddock... but haddock doesn't like him"
So cute! It's great that they have that perfect balance of "spookiness" and humour. Too many deathrock bands around take themselves rather seriously.

I love them, too :-)
They even came to Austria some years ago, so I had a chance to see them live. Great concert, and funny, too.....don't think I have any favourite songs, I like them all...

Cinema Strange are excellent, great as background music and the unconventional songs are brilliant.
Problem is the albums are expensive and hard to find in Australia.
Catacomb Kittens is my favourite followed closely by Dead Eyes Open.

I absolutly adore that band. I love the song Speak, Marauder. But I think he sounds a bit more like Rozz Williams than Peter Murphy.

I love this band so much. I'd have to say my favorite songs by them are 'Aboriginal Aenema', 'Sadist Sagittarius', 'Greensward Grey', and 'Speak, Maruader!' So many more as well. Lucas' voice is amazing. What I think I like most is that alot of their songs are stories that are sung to music (GREAT music at that). One of my absolute favorites by far.

I've completely missed this thread! How come??
Although they're not on my top list of bands (or are they?) I love them.
My favorite song is Dead Eyes Open, followed by Catacomb Kitties, Tomb Lilies, The Broken Ones, and Moundshroud.

*le sigh* I love ze band
I must admit the singer has quite an androgynous voice, when I first heard it it took me a while to work out the singer's gender
Favourite song............Catacomb Kittens
T'was the first song of theirs I ever listened to.
Suspiciously, most of my favourite songs are the first songs I listened to of their respective bands. hmmm.......

How about Lucas' side project, The Deadfly Ensemble? Any fans? I recently ordered their CD. I just had to after hearing 'Horse on the Moor'.

I've heard only one song by The Deadfly Ensemble.
I didn't know they were a side project of Lucas, though.
But I must say, The Deadfly Ensemble seems a little more like my kind of music than Cinema Strange.

Their 2006 album so lengthfully titled "Quatorze Exemples Authentiques du Triomphe de la Musique Decorative" is extremely good. It has a bonus disc of Lucas reading stories that he wrote.

Still, The Deadly Ensemble kicks Cinema Strange's ass any day.

I have a keen liking to the deathrock revival. It was definetly in need, espically I admire the fact the vocals are old-school goth and sound influenced by Rozz's style (in case you did not notice, I was mainly referring to Bloody Dead, who sound largely influenced by the music of Christian Death)

the deathrock revival was much needed. I love so much about it. Especially Cinema Strange.

Cinema Strange, Bloody Dead and Sexy, and All Gone Dead.
New bands no one should live without.

Get the DVD "Pressed Flowers/Squashed Blossoms". Its a perfect example of their crazy stage antics plus it has a half hour documentary on them thats practically sketch comedy.

Any fan of haunting and beautiful instrumentals should download or somehow listen to "Intermezzo: Bright Violet Euphoria" by these fine gentlemen. Its something right out of an eerie film of somekind.

Oh lordy lord. How I love thee, Cinema Strange. Lucas's voice is absolute bliss, Daniel's basslines send thrills up my spine and he's my role model for bass-y-ness, and the guitar riffs are so enticing. Cinema Strange is the very first gothrock band that I listened to. Among my favorite songs, which are oh so hard to choose, are Catacomb Kittens, Speak! Marauder, Legs and Tarpaulin, En Hiver, and more. I feel terrible for not recognizing all of the fantastic musical stylings that I've had the delightful experience of hearing.
Haunted House was the first to open my eyes and ears to Cinema Strange and all deathrock/gothrock music. For that, I thank you Haunted House.

Heh, so I meant to respond to that, but I was swept up in the moment.
Intermezzo: Bright Violet Euphoria is indeed euphoric. I adore this song, it's so eerily wonderful. *Sighs in bliss*

Haha. Danny is a role model of mine as well and you're welcome.
