HUMANE! THAT ^ is my absolute FAVOURITE DCD song of all time. Very creepy and astoundingly beautiful. Brendan Perry has a strong and haunting voice. I was surprised to find out what he looked like though. I searched youtube one fine day, and was confronted with a man who apperaed to be a lumberjack! All the same, FANTASTIC.

I think most people refer to DCD's early stuff as dark, like "Labyrinth' for example, though I've not heard it.

To the OP: Yeah, a lot of Goth rock has shall we say...odd vocal styles, and many people don't find it particularly pleasing. Cinema Strange is another example of a band whose vocals won't win them any singing competitions, but they're still good. You should look up Greensward Grey on Youtube.

I have been listening to this gothic xm station on the internet and found some bands i completely love. Mission UK, Wolfshiem, sisters of mercy (which i liked already as well as cruxshadows), girls under glass, the last dance and crane. Yes i noticed alot of goth has strange vocals im still getting used to some of it but to me if it has bad vocals then they should have very good instrumental to make up for it. Also would AFI work in the goth genre of music, i dont think it is. i think its just punk but i have heard it refered to as goth rock when doing a genre search.

Um...AFI is neither goth nor punk. If I'm not mistaken they're some form of light metal. They refer to themselves as "love metal" though there is no such genre.

Fuck, that could be HIM, I have issues keeping them seperate, and don't care nearly enough to look it up. Either way, neither of them are goth or punk.

Lol AFI doesnt refer to themselves as love metal trust me on that. They would fall under just punk then (my friend is a die-hard afi fan) i like that band. HIM is a different story i liked them until i found all their stuff is the same.

Yes there are a lot of old sounding vocals in a lot of goth music. Alien sex fiend is a good example and well, ol' Nick looks almost exatly like he sounds. I think the juxtaposition of the singers voice to some of the music really gives goth part of its sound.

I mean yeah there are melodic voices (in other words people who can sing) like Eva-O, Gitane Demone, and others (especially the female vocalists). However a lot of the lyrics are meant more as spoken word set to music. There's no attempt to hit that last note, really it's just pushing out the lyrics to the tune.

I have to say tho that some voices do annoy me to no end. For example I love Christian Death but on some songs Rozz's voice just makes me want to puncture my eardrums with an ice-pick. Blasphemy I know.

Every time i hear alien sex fiend i get this image of some really horny green guy with tentacles and is like "rawr sex!" maybe its just youtube that distorts things that doesnt sound right. i know they have a habbit of doing that with older music.

Okay, that IS HIM then. Good to know.

I just listened to some AFI (my sister has some) and it doesn't sound like any punk I've ever heard. I'm going to have to doubt you on that claim, but I'm going to be nice for once and not argue it.

With regards to Alien Sex Fiend, I'm pretty sure it's not youtube. They sound pretty fucking wierd on their studio stuff too.

Dreggas: Haha, I know what you mean. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for Rozz's voice, and when I'm not in the mood, it makes me want to hack off my ears.

AFI's very early stuff was a Clockwork punk a'la The Adicts, but I'm not a fan. I could recommend you some much better stuff Breathless Horror.

What genre are you looking for? Something political? Hardcore? Crusty?

Preferably something accessible. Hardcore and political sound interesting.

You know, you don't have to like every goth rock band out there. I can't quite dig on Fields at all. They're too "metal" for my tastes, but I love The Cure and some say they're not goth enough.

Also, I can't quite dig on stuff such as Dead Can Dance. That super mopey ethereal sound comes of as a bit faux to me.

Also, Rudimentary Peni. Nick Blinko's singing is an aquired taste for some.
