There are none in the front of the head or face, none in the eyes. If it was hatred, one would think the face would be included in the barrage of violence.

I suspect that whoever did it, did not hate the victim. They may have been a randomly selected target. The murderer may have had a fixation of nails into the skull only, the penetration of the virgin skull bone by the nail being a proxy r @ p e violation of some psychotic type. If they ever find who did it, the murderer will make an interesting psychological study.

I noticed there were no nails in the face too but I had a different theory to explain it. The article said the body was found in a marsh, and I assumed the victim was held face down against the soft ground in an attempt to smother him or muffle his screams. I imagine the victim was forced or beaten to the ground and held down by others or by the shooter putting his knees on the victim's back--making it harder for him to fight back.

It's also possible that the criminal didn't want to see the victim's face when he killed him. Even the most hardened criminal would probably have a hard time looking the victim in the eyes as he shoots over 30 nails into his head. People who commit hate crimes often attempt to dehumanize their victims in their own mind to make the crime easier to commit. If it was a hate crime then putting the victim face down may have helped the killer think of himself killing some Asian guy instead of this individual guy.
