Chaucer v. Shakespeare

I recently had to read large amounts of Chaucer and Shakespeare as well as a fair amount of criticism on each of them. Maybe I'm wrong but I got the impression that many people favored one over the other in a way that reminds me of the Oxbridge rivalry or--on a simpler level--Chevy v. Ford, Internet Explorer v. Firefox and Cubs v. Cardinals. Am I right in assuming this; and if so, where do you stand?

Where's the "I'm literate and intelligent but, while appreciating the talent of both Chaucer and Shakespeare, would rate neither as my favourite nor be so pretentious as to make a poll comparing the merits of the two in an attempt at dickswinging pomposity that is offensive in its lack of subtlety" option?

I really don't know how you can compare the two, anyway.

I mean, first off, most of their work is separated by like 200 years. And one was a playwright, whereas the other was a poet/author.

They are both intended to give the illusion of culture.

Ok, there's a similarity that makes sense.
