Woot! I just got a call from Jake, the apartment is all done, the carpets just need to dry (we steam cleaned them) and we don't need to be there for that! All that we have left to do is be at the office first thing in the morning so that they can do a walkthrough and turn in our keys. I feel so free, I don't even care that the new place is full of boxes and furniture in random places.

Happy HEIMLICH Day!

June 1, 1974: An article published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine introduces the Heimlich Maneuver. The procedure replaces back slapping as the preferred method to prevent choking.

New cat doesn't only hate my cat Sloan...she hates me. I'm not sure what to do.

Whoa! Didn't see that coming, did you?

Cat owners may know better, but I suspect the path to acceptance is for new cat to learn clearly that you are the source of all good things: water, food, treats, toys, etc.

Where did you obtain said new cat, and how long have you had her? Is she a rescue cat, or just a naturally cranky bitch? Either way, I wouldn't worry too much if you've only had her a while - in my experience, a new cat will take longer to settle in a house which already has others there.

Anyway, I'm with Ben - can of tuna (don't try to bullshit her with pet store cat treats, I've never had a cat that didn't eye me with contemp even if I could persuade it to crunch one up), ball of string. I used to think that was a myth until I saw the sheer ecstasy of cat tangled up in one. And talk to her while you go about your business, get her used to your voice, and leave her alone unless you're feeding or playing with her - don't try to stroke or pet her if she's clearly not feeling it.

BTW, I meant that "Whoa!" only in a mildly snarky way, if you understand what I mean.

It's definitely a good thing that you're giving that critter a home, and she'll come around in time.

My new cat learned to tolerate me once I fed her Temptations. She's nice to me now, and when I pet her, before she would growl and go away, now she looks longingly to the cupboard where I keep the treats. Of course her and Lucy then fight over who gets the Temptations >.>

Just give her time and while you can try to play with her and make nice with treats, mostly just give her space so she can get used to the place without feeling crowded.

I've done a good amount of pet sitting where I didn't actually know the pet before hand (just the owners) and I can tell you that more or less ignoring the cat is the best way to get her interested in you. Just don't show any interest in her until she shows interest in you and whenever she does come up to you have some sort of treat in your pocket (little bits of chicken have always worked well for me) that you can give out right away (but don't try and get her to eat it if she doesn't want to, just go back to whatever you were doing. Once she knows that going to you will lead to something good for her you can replace the treats with something more interactive like a bit of string.

Being allergic to cats, I can guarantee that the easiest way to get a cat interested in you is to ignore them. The more distance you try to keep, the more they seem compelled to get close to you.

I've been invited to a local socialist meet up. Members of the International Socialist Organization are gonna be there and explain the role of the ISO in American politics and share their plans for a Dallas branch. One of my best friends, is good friends with the guy who is hosting it... we're going to be discussing immigrant's rights, gender equality, and the anti-war / anti-death penalty movements. I'm really looking forward to it!
