Captain motherfucking Beefheart.

It's a shame the only thread we have about this brilliant work of living art is one that informs us of his death (shout out to my boy Apathy's_Child for our night of cyber drunk greiving that ended in a confidential episode of male spoonage), and now that the awkwardly but mind blowing dirges have been sung and saluted we must celebrate his life.

Don Van Vleet, better known as Captain Beefheart, basically changed the entire course of music at the time that shocked, confused, and disturbed the audiences of the time. Emerging from the trippy 60s he brought his legacy into the late eighties til he vanished. He did it all with inpenetrable swag and still to this day is unfairly ripped off by eccentrics who could never be as geniunely strange and talented as this man.

For you inferiors who are still getting your dicks off floodland for the 1,000000th time, prepare your ears for this. You ain't heard shit yet:

LOVE. Trout Mask Replica and Bongo Fury have got to be two of the greatest albums ever made, and that's before you even get near Safe As Milk.

Seriously, why have I not heard of this goddamn band before??? The first thing I thought of when it started was this! I digs me some fuckin' harmonica, dude. I dig it like a grave. The vocals reminded me a bit of Nick Cave. This is a band I need to get into. You've been holding out on me! Not cool!

Thumbs up Badass indeed.

Beefheart was a HUGE influence on Cave, along with a tone of other goth rock singers who either paid him great tribute or just flat out ripped 'em off. Cave is one of the masters of humility who gives him the credit the underrated Don Van Vleet deserves.

Trout Mask Replica=pure genius.

I put on Bongo Fury a few weeks ago and my (incidentally, basically fucking GOTH) buddy was like "the fuck is this disco shit?" I was like "boy, I don't know what the fuck kind of disco you been listening to, but you better hook me the HELL UP." He went quiet then stared talking about Johnny Cash.

Hold me

I miss you when I go away, baby. The Beefheart haters' voices ring like metal claws down a big-ass board.

Those haters have no balls man. Staying safe in their self prescribed musical boxes, never stepping out into the big wide outside to get a taste of all the other joys out there.

This is on the the best songs they've collaberated on (from one of Zappa's best albums, incidentally). I always pictured it as the soundtrack of the porno thread. I love the way Zappa's soulless precision jives with Beefheart's dirty soul-cming-outta-his-ears vocals when those guys work together.

Good fucking choice! I keep looking for modern day equivalents but nothing matches up. There's not enough mind altering drugs in music these days

Yet another brilliant choice. Aren't you just a young pup JCC? No offence meant by that, I'm just constantly suprised by how much more mature and grounded you seem than the young people I'm used to dealing with.

17. I've been listening to Captain Beefheart since I was 12 so it's never really struck me as odd.

I don't think it's odd, it's just......different to what I'm used to. All the young people where I live are one of two things, they either throw themselves into seriously cheesy dance, r&b and shitty pop music or they strut around proclaiming their alternative credentials with their you me at whatever t-shirts and sweeping, fringed hairstyles. You're a refreshing change to it.

Do you have awesome older siblings or something? My music taste was downright embarrassing until I was about 19. Being a decade older, I didn't have the advantage of the internet, but I still don't think I would've known what to do with Trout Mask Rep at 12.

Damn right Cuckoo, I had some good albums at age 12 but a lot of what I listened to back then makes me cringe a bit. That said, I was heavily into Queen, Dr Hook and Johnny Cash thanks to my mum so my tastes weren't all bad.
