Roman Catholics.
Any Roman Catholics here? Me and my family are. I was never really that religious but recently I've found myself becoming moreso.

Then why even post? That was entirely pointless and inane.

I don't want rude or unneccesary comments. I'd like to know everyone's view on the Roman Catholic church though. Although I was just "born into it", I still think its the purest and best form of Christiannity, in all respects.

I go to a Theological College and no one there would agree with this, even the Roman Catholics.

How do you assess the 'purity' of a religious sect? My instinct is to base my evaluation of a denomination's 'purity' on its similarity to the original teachings of the parent doctrine's founder, in which case I wouldn't necessarily go so far as to say that a bureaucratic, property-hoarding institution that metes out indulgences to its followers from its headquarters in an autonomous city-state is the 'purest form' of a radical death cult whose central tenets comprise humility, charity, and letting lions eat you without so much as twitching.
Of course, the "purity" of a religion is a totally moot point... let's see, what metaphor should I use to drive this point home? Oh, I know-- no matter how "pure", say, piss is, it's still piss.

Excuse me, gothicusmaximus, but that was like 600 years ago. I'm talking about TODAY. Today the catholic church is all encompassing, and all good. We're not perfect, but we're getting there. I personally don't like Pope Benedict, but when he's gone hopefully we'll have a new pope to turn Catholosism into an even more accepting faith.

You do know the Catholic Church just made an announcement that women are free today because of the washing machine, right? That was like, a week ago.
Seriously, Catholicism is fucking backwards.

Uni, it's insane to say that as a whole, Roman Catholicism is an accepting faith.
It's insane.

But we accept women, and gay peeps, and peeps of different culture and race, we also accept people of different religions, and don't rally around tryna convert them, like Westboro for instance.

The Catholic Church accepts women? Why aren't women allowed to be Catholic priests, but almost every protestant church has female clergy? The Catholic Church is almost 100% responsible for the perceived inferiority of women in today's Western society.
The Catholic Church accepts "gay peeps"? This is so stupid I don't even want to go into it, the Vatican has repeatedly condemned homosexuality.
You accept people of different religions? By putting them on a stake and lighting them on fire?

I was raised catholic, although I'm not religious anymore.
As others have already pointed out, it's just not true that catholicism is somehow more tolerant of women or gays.
It's also definitely not true that catholics aren't concerned with converting, the first missionairies were catholic and there is a missionairy convent in my hometown that's still active today.
I must say however, that, based on my personal experience here in the Netherlands, catholics do seem less zealous than protestants.
Most catholics I know just go though the motions. They christen their kids and adhere to the rest of those hollow rituals for weddings, funerals etc. because it's what everyone does and rarely even attend mass.
They may be exceptions, but the few protestants I know are real zealots. They're in church every week praying their arses off, SINCERELY, don't swear because it's 'sinful', deny evolution, and they think everything in the bible is true and to be taken literally. But I must admit I may have a skewed image because I grew up in a predominantly catholic area.

I am Roman Catholic. Unfortunately we are losing our local Arch Bishop, who is a very good man. He is a charismatic and charing individual, unlike our last Arch Bishop, he had to deal with the molestation issue left by the last Arch Bishop. He will be taking over for the Cardinal of New York.

That is so sad
Its terrible the way the actions of a few bad men affect us all. My parish priest is a lovely man. Not only is he a priest, but a friend. I would talk to him about anything.
Renatus please get on aim. i miss you. x

If you're trying to offend me Albert Mond, then you have failed. I do not like the man. So I am indifferent.

Uh, Unimatrix, the Vatican considers birth control a sin. And abortion a DEADLY sin. And they won't let women become priests. Or gays. Actually can you tell me where the Vatican was accepting of anybody? Even John Paul II was nice to the Dalai Lama to his face but then said some mean things about Buddhism in one of his books.
But otherwise, my mom was raised Catholic, and I always wondered about the things she does, like the rosaries, praying to the saints she was named after, and burying statues of St. Joseph upside down somewhere in our yard when she wanted to sell the house.
Seriously, she did.
