Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Evanescence
OK guys I know that almost no-one on here like the band since they are not considerd "goth" by you guys. Although I can't see how you guys think Marilyn Manson is the goth king and not like Amy Lee.
Maybe they are not goths themselves, but they are still 1 amazing band!
I think there are a Gothic inspiration in their music. Evanescence has some very Gothic-sounding, bone chilling pieces, for example Like You or Whisper, that express depressed feelings of death and darkness far better than a screaming Goth-dressed Marilyn Manson ever could.

Who in this forum has ever stated this? Well, there might have been a few, but they didn't last long.
Try to put forth some thought and logic before creating such moronic threads, you'll only get flamed in the end.

What the fuck would ever make you think we worship Marilyn Manson?

Perhaps try reading a few posts on the forum before telling us who we supposedly think the 'goth king' is.

Hmm.. I was going to write a well thought out reply to this talking about what I think of Marilyn Manson, Evanescence and Amy Lee. But, really.. this person doesn't deserve the time it would take to do so.
You, my friend.. are an arsemunch.

Um, I don't how you would get the idea that we think Marilyn Manson is "goth king." If you look at the threads and such, you will plainly see that we hate his music and that he sucks. As for Evanescence and Amy Lee, I don't have a huge problem with their music, but I wouldn't listen to them on a regular basis.

Don't like Manson; get that straight. Oh, and I don't really care for Evanescense either, nor AFI, HIM, Aiden, Avenged Sevenfold, Eighteen Visions, etc. They're all waaay too pop for me.

Hmm I used to really like Evanescence. I absolutely hate 'Fallen', I preferred 'Origins' much more. It wasn't try to be something it wasn't, unlike 'Fallen'. I liked it, regardless whether the songs were techno-ish, pop or acoustic (I wouldn't have classified their older stuff as nu-metal, as it wasn't very heavy).
But their new album....it's alright I suppose. I think they've calmed away from the commercial aspect. I don't think it's as 'darker' as promised. I guess it's just progressed more. I don't like they lyrics on a few songs though. They're just bog standard whingey crap.

Marilyn Manson isnt our god, Jillian is! In all seriousness though, I'm still trying to figure out where that comment came from...

I personally like MM. I'm not going to not like him because I'm goth and thats how the goth bandwagon rolls. I thought we were suppost to be independant? Yeah I'm being snide, I'm just feeling sour today.
Disclaimer:
No I don't think anyone here is on any sort of bandwagon.

Hmm... I'm going to just ignore what was said and rather focus on the topic title. I love Evanescence, and I love Amy Lee's voice and writing. I really don't care about what their label is or isn't, because I like the music. I agree with She_Is_My_Sin that the Origins music is really nice. It's quite different from Fallen or The Open Door. Some of the Origins songs are haunting, some have a techno-ish beat, and others are mostly piano with voice, but I really enjoy it all.
If you like Evanescence try finding a copy of Origins (won't be easy to find a decent copy) online or get the mp3s. There's also a pretty good cover of Heart Shaped Box out there. I can't remember which song it is, but I have an mp3 of one that's funny because at the end you hear Amy Lee saying, "Oh, you did that on purpose?" to one of the other band members.

Evanescence? I've heard them called all sorts of thing. Goth, pop, alternative, emo... Usually, when someone says they're a certain type of music, that someone hails from a different genre. In other words, someone who (more likely than not) doesn't know what they're talking about.

I used to listen to them but I've never been a big fan. Amy Lee has got a wonderful voice, though. I can't really comment further because I have only listened to "Fallen" and various random EP tracks...i.e. their cover of "Heart-Shaped Box" which I kindof hate.
And um, I think the Marilyn Manson misconception has already been addressed, so uh....yeah.

Don't cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
You want me,
Come find me.
Make up your mind.
Should I let you fall?
Lose it all?
So maybe you can remember yourself.
Can't keep believing,
We're only deceiving ourselves .
And I'm sick of the lie,
And you're too late.
Don't cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
You want me,
Come find me.
Make up your mind.
Couldn't take the blame.
Sick with shame.
Must be exhausting to lose your own game.
[ these lyrics found on completealbumlyrics.com ]
Selfishly hated,
No wonder you're jaded.
You can't play the victim this time,
And you're too late.
Don't cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
You want me,
Come find me.
Make up your mind.
You never call me when you're sober.
You only want it cause it's over,
It's over.
How could I have burned paradise?
How could I - you were never mine.
So don't cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
Don't lie to me,
Just get your things.
I've made up your mind.
VERSUS
In the marbled reception hall I received a three band gold ring, from Mark. A token of esteem. Running through ghost closet locker rooms, to hide from Peter, who has fallen to the old cold stone floor, wheezing and emitting a seemingly endless flow of ectoplasmic white goo from ears and mouth. A wind rushes through the hall, whistles as it breezes through the narrow slits in the green locker doors. I hide in one of these, number thirteen.
Barely concealed but hopeful
Blackout
Blackout!
I will clinb this high wall
In rememberance of Clancy
To regain or re-earn my life
As I died just a flicker of an eyelid ago
The wall has many holes
And many foot pieces to fasten to
The wall is dangerous, and this is my penance
My penance and my task
I did it once and they wondered
Yet I need to go, once more around
Up breathtakingly
Across rigidly
Down easily - and foolishly
I endeavoured again
To climb the wall in vain
And capture back my chain
Of lillies and remains
Of lillies and remains
Of lillies and remains

They never claimed to be goth or punk. The only thing they ever claimed to be is a rock band. Have you heard their old stuff? It's a lot less "processed". Of course most of their songs that make it onto the Top 40 stations are going to be more mainstream sounding, that's marketing for ya. That's why I don't listen to the radio much anymore - I just buy CDs or mp3s. All bands who "make it big" as in super-stardom get flamed for "not being like they used to", but that's the natural progression of things in the music business. You have a right not to like them, though, I'm not arguing with that.

Damn Persephone, you need to calm it! Time out! You get waaay to angry about Amy Lee & personally I don't like these aggressive rants.
Fair enough you don't like the band, but please can you refrain from spouting stuff like that? I don't go around wishing death upon every band I don't like everytime they are mentioned (dammit even Betty Curse).
So Evanescence had mainstream success? So what? Only because what they produced was different to what was around the mainstream. They aren't as successful anymore, anyway. It's not as if Amy put a gun to your head & threatened you to listen to Evanecence.
Sheesh. If anyone else has anything bad to say about Evanescence, or any other sort of band for that matter, post it in the suitable thread or keep it to yourself.
Now, can we all get along nicely? Pleeease? *puppy dog eyes*

ha ha...ok ok...so maybe my hatred for this crappy band goes deeper than just the crappy band...its just that bands like this are pop. there is no escaping it. fair enough. in culture today, pop is king. BUT people who listen to this drivel pick up little shards of what specific subcultures are, and then try and mimic it. they then think this makes them a part of the subculture they're mimicing.
I saw it when Avril Lavigne came around and made people believe that listening to her made them punk. Despite their lack of understanding of A: what punk is about B: where punk was placed in history and C: what it meant to be punk. they also totally disregarded that concept of what it took to classify the crap they were listening to...i blame MTV and i blame mainstream pop-tarts for killing the wonderful thing that used to be punk.
just because you put on a tie and mess up your hair, or slap on some eye-liner and groan about how pathetic life is, it doesnt give you the right to walk over people's belief systems. I grew up on anarchy and the history and politics of punk. if you cant educate yourself or at least try to figure out what you're getting yourself into, then stick to pop!

Pop music, ALL MUSIC is marketed/ merchandised in the same way. IE internet, stores, radio. So I don't know what all the fuss is about.
Personally I like Ev.
