Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

160k mp3 ought to be good enough for anyone

FLAC is the same audio quality as a CD, Jonny. Why does Radiohead still release CD's, then? Hell, why record in a studio when you can record using a laptop with Pro Tools and a $150 audio interface?
I don't have golden ears, and the bulk of my music collection is encoded in 160k ABR AAC, but I appreciate having a choice. Like what NIN gave us.

I can't wait to download their new stuff to my already bloated collection and then not give my full attention to it.

FLAC is simply a lossless audio format. 160-320 kbs .MP3 is good.
Saya, if you don’t mind me asking; how big is your collection already?

A 160 bit rate for MP3s is certainly not good enough for everyone. I can usually tell the quality difference between the most common bit rates and I have a considerable degree of tinnitus so I can't imagine what it must sound like to people with better ears than mine. Sadly, sound quality is seldom an issue with young people who download their music free and listen to it on $5 earbuds in public places with considerable background noise.
Once I finally figured out how to handle FLAC and burn lossless CDs I gave up 95% of my MP3 pirating.

Totally But I take it back; 160 is really pushing it, obviously anything below that is utter rubbish. Personally I focus on high bitrate 256-320 Mp3, but nothing beats unadulterated lossless .FLAC!

I reduce the bit rate to 1, then back up to .FLAC, then reverse it and play it through a child's walkie talkie. Fuck yr fidel(Castro)ity!

I have a cheap baby monitor. If I give you the transmitter, can I listen to your tunes?

I think Crass recorded a few things with a tape recorder, so I'm not going to sweat if it's 160k

A friend of mine had a punk band back in the 90's and recorded all of their shit on a radioshack casette recorder, then when they eventually had then money for the technology, fed it into a computer (line in from said tape recorder) and burned shitty mp3's onto Cd's.

I've gotten back into cassettes as of late, ordered a bunch of crasher crust and d-beat for cheap, sounds great.

I make the standard for my music at a bitrate of 160 for mp3s, though for CDs I tend to use a lossless audio format.
