We don't have Hot Topics down this way... i think... we do have something very similar though; we calls it: Dangerfield... are Dangerfields up there in America and the like? or is it a case of Dangerfield being the Australian Hot Topic?

On that note; do you have Off Ya Tree up there?

We have "Real Groovy" in New Zealand, which isn't the most appealing shop in the world to me. I'll stick to good old Mango Music or Old Boat, thanks. I got some seriously good bargains at both, including The Cure Pornography for like 15 bucks NZ (10 US... maybe 12).

I heard Dethklok at the one here once.

Being something of an Adult Swim nerd, I rather enjoyed it. XD

Okay, so maybe I am overreacting. But.. Sisters of Mercy! In HOT TOPIC!
This might just be the happiest day of my life.

Phillip Morris owns this shit anyways... Thats why I quit.

Hot Topic Blows, its so fucking unoriginal, it turned any form of Goth culture into a McDonalds drive thru.

But I have met cool people there while buying crap like socks or buttons but fuck it still blows.

Once I heard Love and the Rockets in Hot Topic. I was highly amused.

Goth and Punk as a look is stupid now. The only reason why either one was good is because the early scenes were full or artistical types who made their own clothes, or went to Vintage shops and modified their clothes, or were in a band and rich enough to have Fashion Designers make their clothes. The best band T-Shirts i have seen lately are ones my friends' print on their silkscreens at work, and not even official shirts. Hot Topics just caters to the unimaginative types who somehow found their ways into the punk and goth scenes.

If you don't like it, then don't shop there.

Problem solved.

Ahh.

You're right; in order to assure our absolute Gothicity, no real Goth should ever EVER step foot in Hot Topic! Upon doing so, they must have their Goth membership revoked immediately!! :O [<-- Note sarcastic tone]

It's a store. No more, no less. It doesn't take away a piece of your black vinyl-clad soul to step foot in one.

Besides, if they have some cool band shirts, what's wrong with shopping there?

Ah, really?

And what exactly are the rules of being a part of a particular subculture?

Look at the hoards of idiot Mansonite kids from the late 90s onward, who call themselves goth, Hot Topic Scooby Doo goth is lame, it has nothing to do with the Bauhaus/Peter Murphy's reasoning for founding Goth which was; basically instead of being Destructive like Punk, Goth was meant to be a creative Force. There's nothing creative about going into Hot Topics and buying into a look.

Well said!

It -is- true that kids who are just in it for the spookiness of it can be irritating, but at the same time you have to keep in mind that the very word 'Goth' was something first applied by our illustrious media; the fans of the music weren't the ones who started it in the beginning. Peter Murphey didn't 'found Goth' per se; he just did his own thing, and it ended up being a starting point for Goth. Truth is, the music considered Goth from back then evolved from post-punk. Strange, I know, but true.

As for Masonite kids, I honestly don't know any, though it seems to be a major irritation of several net.goths. I've never been a huge fan of Mason myself, but meh; he's made a hella lot of money by doing his own thing [sort of], so I can't really see anything bad about him personally.

Creative forces have the very real problem of only being original for a short time; if they are successful, everyone and their mom wants to copy it; if they aren't, then they are forgotten about fast.

But, such is the way of the world..

The grocery store is also mainstream. So are most restaurants, and traveling to different countries, and speaking English, and so on and so forth.

You're entitled to not like Hot Topic and be Goth, and I'm entitled to go into it on occasion and still retain my love of the music and my own individual style.

If it's a sin to say that I like some of the things they have, then I admit; I'm a most horrid sinner! [I bought a Jack Skellington scarf, hat, and glove set on sale there that absolutely saved my life on a -very- cold day! ]

Yep. And you are completely entitled to be laughed at by those who aren't the Scooby Doo type.
