The Headless Horseman

I was doing a poetry challenge, and wrote my first sonnet. Just thought I'd share it.

THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN

In darkness he comes riding on a horse,

Searching for all the souls that he can find,

Relentless, tracking them with no remorse,

Looking only ahead and ne'er behind.

Heedless of how they run from him in fear,

Laughing, as they behind their shutters hide,

Head tucked inside his cape of black, so drear,

Razor sharp sword clenched always by his side.

Thundering across the bridge and up the road,

Lightning fast hooves make sparks, and nostrils flare,

Now hear him clattering up to your abode,

Only the foolish meet him if they dare.

"Don't look the headless horseman in the eye,

Unless you wish to lose your head – and die."
