I can pick up the odd word and I can read hiragana and katakana, but sadly thats probably as far as I'll get to go with it, its been a while so I'm not confident enough to pick it up again with a third semester of it.

Let me guess. You wanna be able to see anime without subtitles.

Hehe, I was about to say the same thing.

I took a year of Japanese class, so I could probably last about 30 seconds into a conversation before becoming completely lost.

Yes in fact that is exactly what I want to do!! No but seriously I'm only doing this in my spare time. I'd liked to learn spanish one day too. And possible German but right now I am concentrated on japanese. I don't even watch anime anymore Jillian.

Hopefully one day I'll visit Japan and Singapore. I'd like to do something more in my life than watch tv without subtitles.

Yes, yes I do. I only know a few basic phrases in Japanese. I'm around the language all the time though...I play a lot of fighting games where the characters speak it, I watch a lot of anime, and I listen to Japanese music every now and then.

If you want to visit Singapore, then you should know they primarily speak Mandarin Chinese there, and not Japanese. [Though, to be fair, it's a rather large melting pot, so you could stick with English and be just fine. ]

If you don't learn either, then I would highly recommend the Lonely Planet phrase books for all your language translation needs.

I used to have the Lonely Planet guide to traveling north-east Asia.

I second this recommendation.
