Goth-Punk in China/Hong Kong, Etc..

i currently live in china, i was from the states. people at school and around me whereever i go keeps looking at me like im a freak. people tease me because the music i listen to and the way i dress, i know there is a topic about this but most people in asia like pop. guys and girls where hip hop clothings but they listen to pop....i guess hip hop culture it alot more popular than goth/emo/punk culture.......

Hm, sounds like the nintey's..heh...Remember, be who ever the hell you want. It isn't what they think, it is what you think, be that you are a homicidal maniac, or just a killer of Pop-Tarts, do what you want. Why fall into trends? In fact, give THEM weird looks and tease THEM about their music. It will be fun, and remember to not give in to what they want.

Sorry I'm a bit late, but I'm from Asia so I thought I'd share this with you. .

Well in my original country we are just not used to those alternative subculture, and the lifestyles are just not familiar, it's that simple, I think. I've never seen any goths in my original country for my entire life, and punks and metals most of the time are considered posers.

People like hip hop and pop because that is what they always have on MTV. A bit unfair, don't you think?

ViciouslyBeautiful - Just out of curiosity, which Asian country are you from?

Exactly what you just described goes on in Malaysia. MTV is the only thing that dictates what's 'cool' here. Very few people think for themselves, it seems.

That's awesome! I lived there for 5 years, and still visit Bali at least once a year. I much prefer it to Malaysia, although they are indeed similar.

Yeah... Lolis (the shortened form of the bleeped-out word) are big in Japan, mostly because of the indies VK and j-rock groups like Dir en Grey, Moi dix Mois, and (the now-defunct) Malice Mizer and Due le Quartz. MM and MDM's guitarist, Mana, is the most popular name on that scene. Mostly, Japanese goth goes from what looks like Victorian funeral garb all the way down to a punk-rock sort of look, all with a Japanese flair (like mile-high platform footwear), but like anything else, it's a nice look if it's not overdone.

heh... sorry, rambling again...

I experienced similar behaviour in China, people starring and teasing, but mostly that's because of me being blond. For the Gothic scene, there are some in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, but sure not as many as in Europe or the US. And mostly it's metal or rock. For some good links/news on bands, gigs a.s.o. in Beijing visit www.rockinchina.com. Does anyone have any suggestions on good clubs or gothic webpages in Hong Kong?

Yush, but you need to understand that Gothic and Loli style is very much like our own Gothic culture. It's still derived from the same beginings.

Maybe the Japanese is the most creative and are daring enough to buck the tradition while other countries they never thought about gothic subculture except to be hip hop which is really popular. After all, I do notice that people who live for the subculture is the types of music they listen to.

No,I am but an ordinary chinese goth, the sort you would meet in any street of Guangzhou on Saturday night. The notion of talking to original goths here is considered quite crazy by my roomates.

I don't know about being original, but do you see a large number of goths on that street you mention? Or just a few? I guess the numbers of goths will be always be small no matter where you go except maybe in England or Germany, things like that.

Hello Aerynna.
Looks like you overlooked the obligatory Introduction. I am sure it would take an obviously intelligent person like you only a few minutes to answer the 13 questions located at https://www.gothic.net/boards/showthread.php?t=1644
and then repost them in the Intro Board, so we may all get to know you better. We have all done it (mine is way back there).

Arigato!
