Hello from DrenchedInGin

Hello, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm fairly new, although I have been lurking about for a while to get a feel for this community. Seems like a great place to be, so here I am.

1. What do you do? (Hobbies, job)
I work as a science writer which, unfortunately, is currently a lot less interesting than it ought to be. To keep myself entertained I sing jazz in a cabaret, roleplay (the geeky variety), read vast amounts, hunt for beautiful vintage clothing, learn American Tribal style bellydance and mix cocktails. That tends to keep me out of trouble. Mostly.

2. Where are you from?
I’m from a wee town in the Australian Alps, but my family is English.

3. Who is your favorite author?
Ooooh, so many to choose from! Can I pick more than one? It depends on my mood at the time, but I always really like Connie Willis, Diana Wynne Jones, M.R James and William Gibson. (No doubt there are others and I’ll suddenly remember them later and think ‘oh nuts’…)

4. What are your favorite films?
I’m a mad fan of classic films and ghost stories. My Top Five includes the BBC adaptation of The Woman In Black, Casablanca, The Sixth Sense, El Espinazo del Diablo and (she adds, watching her goth rating plummet) Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. (I know I know, but it’s so funny after five martinis!)

5. What music do you want played at your wedding?
I’ve been wed for a while now. We had our first dance to the ‘Merry Widow Waltz’, hohoho. In the program we called it ‘Waltz by Lehár’ so as not to tempt Fate.

6. At your funeral?
Vera Lynne singing ‘We’ll Meet Again’.

7. This IS a gothic website, so... how do you want to die?
Of extreme old age because I relish the thought of being an old, grumpy glamgoth – and slowly, so I have the opportunity to enjoy ebbing away.

8. What kind of casket would you want?
Recycled cardboard, lined in feathers. And coffin-shaped. I love that shape.

9. What's your FAVORITE outfit?
A wonderful 1940s black lace mourning frock with a nipped-in-waist and a flared skirt. I found it on eBay, paid practically nothing for it and I love it with all my heart. It goes with a little feathered hat with a veil, black gloves, black pearls, tiny velvet purse, heels and bright red lipstick. I feel so girlie wearing it!

10. What's one thing you miss about being a little kid?
Throwing tantrums in public.

11. What's your favorite band?
The Squirrel Nut Zippers.

12. What kind of education do you have? What is/was/will be your major?
I currently have a Masters in heritage management, and right now I’m staring down both barrels of a PhD. (Save me, Mammy!)

13. Why did you join?
For some good conversation about all things dark. This looks like the right place!

I love your favorite outfit and I want to see pics ASAP.

I love Diana Wynne Jones, too... Her Chrestomanci books are so cool!
Why thank you! I can tell I'm going to like it here a great deal - finding a list where people put some effort into their posts was like finding a lost paradise!

May I also say that when I first saw your avatar I laughed until I cried - pure genius!

Oh yes... Chrestomanci. I want to take him home with me. Mmmmmm...

Thank you ever so. I blush (or would, if I weren't wearing so much makeup). And hooray, another Squirrel Nuts fan! Very happy to meet you.

Go right ahead and use it (although I confess, I don't know what it means. I gather it's a good thing :-)

Thanks for the translation. Excellent, I've learned a new word. Hooray! I've been mad propzed! I'm cool!

(Well actually I'm very old. But I feel cool now.)

Curious is good. Hehehe, well technically I'm... erm, let's just say I'm in the later part of my thirties.

Mentally, I vary between seven and a hundred and thirty (roughly) depending on the amount of blood in my caffeine-stream.

Just to confuse things I contracted arthritis in my twenties and started going grey when I was sixteen. (But it's okay, I have a marvellous relationship with a clever colourist and we're having lots of fun with pretty colours until I hit fifty, when I intend to revel in my greyness.)

I just feel old a lot of the time. But most of my gothy friends are around the same age, bless their sweet Bauhaus-listening hearts.

Yep, tis me. Thanks-- I love it too!

Your first post wasn't a fluke, it seems. All who appreciate art, music, and literature are welcome here.

The geeky sort of roleplaying... that would be Dungeons and Dragons and related games, correct? If so (even if not), I have a site that I'd like to introduce you to-- it's mostly composed of freeform (as opposed to dice-rolling) roleplaying, which I prefer since it is closer to actual fiction writing. If you're interested, you'll see just how fun it can be.

Sorry for the shill, but I felt that it was justified.

Oooh, another roleplaying person. Too good!

Circle V, I'd love to see this website. Yes I play D&D, and whatever else comes my way, and I also prefer freeform when it's available. Shill away! Many thanks.

You may all feel free to join the site or add me as a contact, but please keep in mind that your rights may be revoked if you act in an insulting, immature, or otherwise ignorant manner.

My accounts on that site include Kaitan, Vendek, Toris Saren, Devis, Kheris Akhaan, and Mr. White. Keep an eye out-- there aren't many actual members, but most are very active.

And, yes... my main character is a vampire. Cliche, I know, but I think that I've handled it well, allowing for a few drama-frenzies.

It looks intriguing. Sorry, I haven't access to Messenger at the moment but I will on another computer later in the day. I'll take a look at the link you've sent and see if I can get a feel for it. Thank you for your generosity!

Oh my, you're all so sweet... sweetsweetsweet.

YES! Oooo yes, I've been swing dancing! Isn't it fabulous? If only I could persuade my ubergeek husband away from his computer for long enough to join me again (sigh).

Heaven is a dark and smoky gin joint with Glen Miller's band playing in the stand and genius bartenders who never ask the Dreaded Question (curse that 007 - we hates him!) and fabulously well-dressed fascinating people muttering in quiet corners.
