The Venus Project
So, a friend of mine has been trying to convince me of the validity of the ideals promoted by the Venus project. I just don't buy it, certain parts of it sound great, in theory. However I cannot see it being a practical solution to the conflicts and needs of society as it is. It all seems a little cultish to me and I can't wrap my head around why he believes in it so much. Thoughts?

Well, no, I like holding sexy word power in my hands.Still, it's nice to exercise the old brain every once in a while and think about something other than what weird and wonderful things I'm going to get my characters to do to each other

That IS brain exercise. There is no such thing as wasted writing. (I actually really believe that.)

Ah, I don't think it's wasted writing. Not at all., I just like to keep multiple things going at once.

Their points are great and make sense, but it comes with such stupid baggage.
Look up utopian socialism and see their similarities.
I'd love for humans to end up living in self-sustained spaces, but these people focus on engineering the structure of society and making people fit in it.

There are certain aspects of the projects ideals that do make a lot of sense, I'm not writing the ENTIRE thing off as something without any reasonable points, I just can't see how they would engineer such a drastic change or how there would be a place for everyone within the proposed society. Too many people would have nowhere to go within the structure they are wanting to create because their abilities and talents would be obsolete within the system they are currently proposing.

I like it. Then again, I am a Marxist and after having a look through the site their new 'ideas' are rehashed Marxism with a little Trotsky thrown in sure.
It's kinda sad really, considering a bunch of Americans have an idea for a new way to run governments and change the world creating a utopian society, but they are really just promoting Marxism. The fact they didn't know that is what makes it sad.

The astroid belt prevents going to Venus; however, thinking about colonizing other planets is fun. I don't know how real it is. Seems better to get better at living here harmoniously before up and leaving.
