Dear FAFSA
My parents don't pay for my rent. My parents don't pay for my car insurance. My parents don't pay for my phone. My parents don't pay for my food. My parents don't pay for my gas. My parents don't pay for my utilities. And my parents definitely don't pay for my schooling.
My parents also refuse to give me their financial information. Even if they did, why the fuck do you want it? My need is based on MY income, that I am living on (barely). I have 30 dollars a week to pay for food, gas, and anything else I might need. I cannot afford to pay for college. What I need has jack motherfucking shit to do with what my parents make.
I don't give a fat rat's ass what YOU think my parents SHOULD be paying for my college education, because they don't and even if they wanted to they couldn't. And even if they could and they wanted to, I wouldn't let them because it's not THEIR college education they're paying for, it's MINE. Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you.
FAFSA can choke on the fattest of dicks.

How old are you, PJ? You might get independent student status based on that. Their website says you can talk to a financial aid administrator though and they can document that they don't pay for your education.
I had to go through this crap too, I had to get documentation that I was estranged from my dad. Thankfully now I'm old enough to be considered independent.

I just turned 22. They consider you a dependent until you're 24.

Ouch, here its if you're out of high school 5 years. Also, happy belated!
It sucks but you're going to have to make a stink of it, and get documentation, even if its just a letter from them saying they refuse to disclose their financial info and they aren't helping you in any way.

That shit sucks. I went through the same bullshit the first time I tried to go to college. I was 21 or 22 and hadn't lived with my mom since I was 16. They still considered me my mom's dependent. I didn't try to go back for about 10 years.
Talk to the counselors, raise a huge stink about it. Don't put your education off.

From what I've gathered, the offices that handle this kind of thing are generally pretty sedentary. You kind of HAVE to raise hell. I know I had to.

Veterans are independents! And you'll be 24 by the time you get home anyway. Plus won't the military pay for yours or something?

I didn't say it was a realistic worry, ma'am.

Yeah, go to the financial aid office and raise hell. Or find a young lady in the same situation and marry her .

Go and raise hell, there are forms and such that will need to be filled out and they will have to confirm that your parents do not help you but it can be sorted and you can be helped, you are just going to have to fight tooth and nail.

When I went to college, my parents could help me with all of that and the first time I didn't want their help. The second time they said they would and didn't. That's just life. It is called being independent. You know, I don't really want to be indebted to them, so it is all beautiful.

You go raise yourself a barrel load of hell with those stupid frackers.
Boy I'm glad we have HECS when I went to school - all my fees were deferred until i got a job, and only when I was in a certain tax bracket did I have to pay back my university.

I'm 24 and for the first time in my life FAFSA is giving me $2700 per semester
(I'll also note, I'm starting my 2nd degree and my parents are now divorced, which you can put in one of the fields. And the Grant is covering everything since I'm doing my first 2 years at a community college this time around).
I'm pretty stoked.

If you are going to undergrad that is true. However, if you are going to graduate school or getting an advanced degree, then you can be considered independent. See if you can talk to someone from FedLoans and explain your situation.
