We know...EPS was on the couch with a laptop and looked up who was going to be in what role. I myself think Gary Sinese should be Napoleon.

from what i hear, they're leaving out the whole "chest exploding exit wound ice cream" scene, so who fucking knows what the writer came up with as a trigger for the rest of the film.

Just looked it up for myself...looks like Ethan will play the role of the cop...Fishburne the 'Napoleon' character. It will be in Detroit, not L.A., and on New Years Eve during a snowstorm. Instead of "James Wood's little girl getting blown away" it will be Fishburne as a "mobster and cop killer" and the gang is replaced with bad cops trying to kill him so he can't testify against them.

All I have to say is "Do you have a smoke?"

Hmmmm.....a lot of complaining about remaking a film that was already a remake (I'm sorry...."reinterpretation") of another film.

That's right, "Assault On Precinct 13" is a reworking of Howard Hawks "Rio Bravo". No less than Carpenter himself has said so many times.

Now, here's one of those instances where the remake is better than the original because "Assault" has A-more violence, and B-less John Wayne. This automatically makes it the better of the two (however, having Ricky Nelson, Dean Martin, and Angie Dickinson does push "RB" up quite a few notches past "tolerable", and Walter Brennan pushes "RB" into "fucking cool" territory).

All in all, I'd suggest you guys checking out Howard Hawks' films. You'll not only see why he's so revered by a lot of film-makers out there (Carpenter, who also remade "The Thing", but he's also loved by all the 70's movie brats, the French New Wave directors, and many many more directors whose names would probably bring about a lot of blank stares), but you'll also see a lot of really really cool films (and in almost every genre out there, from the gangster "Scarface", to the screwball "Bringin Up Baby" and "His Girl Friday", to the sci-fi "Thing From Another World" to the noir "The Big Sleep" to the epic "Land Of Pharoes" to the western "El Dorado"...god, I could just go on and on...)

Oh I know it's a remake of Rio Bravo.

"Thing From Another World" (remade into "The Thing") strayed from the original "whodunnit" novel, so I prefere the remake. Besides, Matt Dillon (James Arnez) is a monster? Do you think Ms. Kitty would bang a radioactive monster? I think not!

Walter Brennan rocks btw. He's how hardcore I am; I have a couple of his recordings. Couldn't really sing, you could say he was one of the pioneers of rap. Just listen to "Old Rivers" sometime...

the only reason im complaining is because Horror (not that precinct is truly horror..) movies these days are ALL remakes. TCM, Dawn of the Dead, Toolbox Murders, Amityville Horror, just announced Evil Dead is to be remade as well. What im pissed about is, there are a lot of really good stories out there in novels or from writers that are getting turned down, that would make awesome ORIGINAL movies. Steve Niles save us all....

Well in the cases of DotD, TCM, and even Toolbox Murders (how have you seen that already?) they are different enough to be original. Heh...when they remade Psycho they did it shot-for-shot. Wow that blew.

I put no faith in the Evil Dead remake rumours. At least I hope not...

Trust not imdb.com.

Not saying they aren't thinking about it, but I think the fan backlash, as well as being distracted by all the other projects might kibosh this.

Al-haven't heard any of Brenanns fine warbling, but I own William Shatner's cover of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"...my friend uses it whenever he wants to clear the club out (well, that or Buddy Holley, since most goths don't understand the genius of Buddy Holley, and by most goths I mean the ones that go to clubs and make you feel like you're in the middle of a peyoted-up x-treme "Blind Date" episode while also trying not to look THAT desperate after being turned down 20 times that night, which is about 98% of the scene here).

And fear not about the "ED" remake....I've checked a few sources, and it's just a rumor. (And certain people have said "no way" as far as being involved)

Deadhymn-ummm, almost every movie being pumped out nowadays is a remake....hell, Tarantino's made a career out of ripping off other films, and I don't hear anybody bitching about it. If you can name me one original Hollywood film not made by Wes Anderson, Charles Burnett, Nancy Savoca, or Martin Scorcese, please let me know.

Loy - Can you please tell me what Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is a remake of? I know I know...The Time Machine right?

If you choose to look at every film as a remake, thats your decision. Seems kind of like a loose argument to me though. Sure you can stretch it out and say that Fight Club is a remake of Drop Dead Fred (both had imaginary friends...) but do you really have to? Sure there are no more original ideas. And the word remake is certainly open to interpretation, since the english language somehow became pliable to fit any given situation (Clinton), BUT influences are one thing. Remakes are another. I can name a SHITLOAD of movies that arent remakes. But I cant name a SINGLE film, even by Scorsese, that doesnt show its influences.

Im hoping it will spark curiosity, so that others may revel in its glory.

Up next on the remake schedule...The Fog, The Blob, House on Sorority Row, House of Wax, Amityville Horror and Mutant.

I just watched a movie! "Les Enfants du Siecle" or "Children of the Century". It's about the life of George Sand (a.k.a. Aurore Dudevant) and Alfred Musset. Quite pornographic- lots of lusty sex scenes. I watched it all in French, so I thought the acting was really well, but, of course, if you don't speak French, you'll have a different opinion of the movie than me.

I agree it should be required viewing. Changed my life. Mine was like Office Space til I saw this, then I went into work that Monday with JAck's attitude. I got promoted and moved away from the boss I hated!
(oh and the author of the book lives here in Oregon, super super nice guy. Were it not for the fact I run the risk of running into my ex gf to see him again...)

The Blob was remade, and rather well I might add. WTF?

The Fog? Listen my people, gather around Al. Any movie, ANY movie with the great one, you know who I am speaking of, yes, Tom Atkins, should not be touched.

I know about the Amityville remake. That movie was a POS to start with. And no, I no longer think it was real.

Eh...they are remaking SheDevil...so why not HOSH?

I know this is a little late but Deadhymn, were you being sarcastic when you said that I grasped the meaning of the movie, EasyRider, and that it was brillant? I'm just curious because I'm afraid that it might be sarcasm.

Silence of the Lambs is one of my all time favorites. Must be the only chickie who had a crush on Dr. Lector, as morbid as that sounds. Ah well ... he had the whole crazy intellectual thing going on ...

Last movie I saw ... um ... hmmm .. oh yes! Iron Monkey - the badly dubbed version with totally western voices (it's China! Should they not have at least used Chinese voice actors speaking in English). Oh pure fun and comedy mixed with a cute kid who looks strangely like one of my cousins and outrageous kung fu.

Was it the "Tarantino Presents" version that cut out the kick-ass 10 minute long nunchuck fight scene or the "the words have stopped but the lips keep moving" version?

It was both versions. I missed a cool 10 minute nunchuck battle?!?!?! I want my money back!!! Damn you Tarantino ... Could've left it in. I don't mind bad dubbing ... as long as the story and the fighting are good (the dubbing makes the comedy even funnier).
