Internet Troll Jailed

Quote:
An "internet troll" who posted obscene messages on Facebook sites set up in memory of dead people has been jailed.

Colm Coss, of Ardwick, Manchester, posted on a memorial page for Big Brother star Jade Goody and a tribute site to John Paul Massey, a Liverpool boy mauled to death by a dog.

The 36-year-old "preyed on bereaved families" for his "own pleasure", Manchester Magistrates Court heard.

He was jailed for 18 weeks for sending "malicious communications".

The posts included comments claiming he had sex with the victims' dead bodies, the court heard.

He was charged under the Communications Act 2003, for sending malicious communications that were grossly offensive.

Unemployed Coss was only caught when he sent residents on his street photos of himself saying he was an internet "troll".

One of the residents passed the photos to police who interviewed him before he eventually admitted to posting abusive messages.

The term "troll" was described in court as someone who creates new identities on Facebook accounts and then posts numerous offensive comments to upset or provoke a reaction from others.

Chairwoman of the bench Pauline Salisbury said: "You preyed on bereaved families who were suffering trauma and anxiety.

"We know you gained pleasure and you aren't sorry for what you did."

The defence raised possible mental health issues but they were dismissed by the bench.

It's a brit jail. It's nothing like the American penal system.

No rapes, but you do have to slop out in the mornings.

Heh, penal.

It's actually true in pretty much every country outside of America. You can be arrested for saying silly shit. In some countries wearing silly shit will get you arrested. It's not just the UK.

Whatever became of the American case where some girl's mother caused one of her friends to kill herself by posing as someone on Myspace? I'm pretty sure they changed the law so that you can't harass anyone online either.

Indeed, you can be arrested in Australia for swearing at a police officer. I imagine it's like that in most countries.

One of my mates would have been arrested for ventriloquism last weekend, if it hadn't been that the person that made a comment after him fronted up to it.

Kiwi cops are worse.

Didn't they arrest a women for taking off her high heels and chasing after them - something to do with attempted assault with a deadly weapon? (I'm going back a few years now)

A deadly weapon? Seriously?

I hope you're mistaken, because that's just silly.

It was in the late 90's. Her boyfriend was being arrested for something like drunk and disorderly and she took her shoes off and chased after the police.

I think they were stilettos. I tried googling it but couldn't find it. I remember hearing about it because at the time I was working in that general area.

Yeah I thought it was going a bit too far, but that's New Zealanders for you

*wink*

not the same case but similar incident.

Not in Ireland. You can swear at the Gards all day and they can't arrest you. They can however beat you with a baton, as Gards can use their baton at their own discretion, and in Ireland if a Gard tells a judge you were being unruly, the judge will not even listen to you if you try to argue police brutality.

So you won't get arrested, but they will beat you senseless, so its a give and take in society here sure.

It's New Zealand police for you too. I remember once that a Man was charged with using an offensive weapon when he threw a dead hedgehog at someone. Sure, injurious intent might have been more correct, but using an offensive weapon?

It could be worse, New Zealanders could be throwing grenedes at the police, instead of dead hedgehogs.
