Women get told first by our moms and then by every fucking random man in the world "Smile!" When we're sitting around perfectly neutrally, people feel they have the right to CORRECT our lack of (a) perkiness and (b) allure. "You're so pretty when you smile!" is a step further even than just "Smile", because it implies that we're not trying hard enough to be attractive, and that it's our JOB to be appealing to whoever happens to say this.

We actually had this conversation some months back - I remember Asurai saying he had the same problem - and I've seen it at every board I've ever belonged to at some point or another. It's one of those "oh, no, not again" things women deal with on a day-to-day basis (and, no, not just women - but, with us, it carries that extra 'attractiveness' baggage, which is so oppressive).

As I say, knowing you ameliorates the 'issue'.

But, if a stranger came up to me and said that, it'd be all I could do not to smile AND DECK THE FUCKER.

Exactly! i've heard that all too much growing up.. it got So annoying... but, i can generaly tell when someone means it in the way of an actual complement... so, 'tis good. i actually thought it was sweet of Gypsy to say that....
