Large Hole Opens in Home & Kills Occupant

Man dies when large hole opens in home
Monday, April 24, 2006; Posted: 9:07 a.m. EDT (13:07 GMT)

ALTA, California (AP) -- It was like a scene from a horror film: A 27-year-old man plummeted into a gaping hole that suddenly opened beneath a house, trapping him beneath foundation rubble and killing him.

Authorities say the home, built in the 1980s, may have been sitting atop a decades-old underground mine. Recent rains could have softened the ground under the home, in an isolated area near Lake Alta.

"It's unbelievable," Placer County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Dena Erwin said. "From the front of the house, it's absolutely normal. Then, in the middle of the house, is this enormous hole." (Watch for the gaping dimensions of the hole -- 1:54)

The victim was awake and on the ground floor about 9:30 p.m. Friday when the concrete foundation near the kitchen gave way, sending him plunging into to the ground, Erwin said.

Rescuers had trouble reaching him because the ground began to shift, creating an unsafe situation for work crews. Authorities returned to the home Sunday to try and remove the man's body, though geologists were still testing the house's soundness.

The man's identity hadn't been positively established.

Holy Flaming Suprises Batman!!

If this doesn't qualify as Spooky News, I don't know what does qualify.

Damn.

Of all the ways you imagine dying, I guarantee this one was never on the list.

Eeek!!

That is freakin' spooky... I wonder if the house built on an ancient Native American burial site?

You know that happened in the Bible. Someone pissed off Moses and upset God in the process and the Earth opened up and gulped down about 40,000 people. But than again, they seemed to have it coming at the time. I feel real bad about the poor fellow that this happened to. It makes me believe in Morlocks.

What an unfortunate fate.

I live not to far from there, so now, every time I walk into the kitchen I'll have to wonder if I'll plummet into a vast pit of certain death. What a wonderful thought that's going be.

I agree. Your house should be the safest place for you.
Poor guy. That really sucks.

Imagine coming home and finding a huge hole in your livingroom or kitchen.... Or being asleep and getting woken up by the sound of the floor collapsing, and walking out and finding a hole. I think if I saw that in my home I would run out screaming lol.

Man that is creepy.

Guys relax. It wasn't a mine or anything. He was just pissing me off so I called on my pet kitchen to eat him.

Now, all you have to do is not piss me off and you won't suffer the same fate.
