Actually you'll find that there are different definitions of "proof". You can't really prove very many things in the mathematical sense of being 100% sure of them. But then again, you can't prove most stuff that we take to be pretty well established, using that definition. Past that, there's various proofs and arguments for different things, some more agreed upon than others.
The word itself means "love of knowledge." I kind of like that idea - philosophy is about finding out the nature and structure of reality.

Heh - I like seeing their answers. Us philosophy majors started somewhere after all. I do find it interesting that the popular conception of philosophy is confined to philosophy of religion and political philosophy.

I am very disappointed in Descartes arguments in favor of God and in the mind being separate from the body (alluding to the soul), which wouldn't win a freshman debate with his use of irrelevant examples and flawed logic. But I suppose any study of philosophy cannot be considered thorough with reading him.

I've only read his discourse on method and it has absolutely no impact on my philosophy at all.
Descartes is not needed at all. In fact, forget about him entirely. He's just a leftover when someone feels like mocking dualism.

Descartes's importance is primarily for his first two meditations, where he talks about skepticism and sets forth his argument for the cogito. Even within philosophy his later meditations are not considered that important.

Or you can just not even bother thinking about it. Honestly, what would you do if gravity (as an example) failed to continue doing whatever the hell gravity does. A) die violently B) not care and die violently C) Get over it and adapt. I can function just fine not knowing what tomorrow will bring because I don't worry about ridiculous things like the laws of the universe and the future.

Forgive me, I didn't mean to say that the laws of the universe are ridiculous. I meant rather to point out that it is ridiculous to worry about them. Its not like there is an appeals court that one can go to where one may complain that the Laws are not working properly.
