The philosophy thread!!!!

Talk about all of the things you think about! Metaphysics, Logic, Aesthetics whatever the fuck floats your boat about some godamn philosophy! I don't know how this shit works, so the rest of you will have to battle it out in the thread.

Don't say I never gave you anything, Jillybean. :*

I don't follow or read philosophy as much as I should.

I don't think I'm qualified to talk in this thread, but I'd like to think that I'm more of an empiricist in thought.

I had a coworker state a very positive claim about karma being real despite what anyone metaphysically believes. It's amazing what people take as an abstract idea and assume it's a natural law.

I'm sure that someone more well-versed in it will give us a nudge in the right direction if we're doing it wrong.

I think that's actually psychology, illusiory correlations, IIRC. Dammit, I just read that chapter. Yep, when people see two random things and think they are related in some way(That car ran over my dog and then hit a pole, instant karma!).

I don't believe in someone watching over us judging our every move and thought. And certainly not tallying up the deeds of all of the bad people out there. We all have good things and bad things that happen to us. I don't believe in 'bad energy' doing us in, either.

Karma is pretty damned stupid.

I think a lot of what we come to think are natural laws, no matter how insane they seem, is a result of our pattern seeking psychology trying to make sense out of chaos.

Honestly. Is it really so hard to imagine that coincidence is entirely likely and luck is just luck?

See, that's the problem. It's like when people say "say something smart"
If we had a thread about something philosophical, that's another thing. I did one on Marxism, such a broad subject, but it works because people could make questions and opinion on something. It's not just a "oh rabble rabble Nietzsche mumble mumble god rhubarb rhubarb rationalism! blabber blabber I like Plato more than Socrates."

And god help me I will find a way to fuck up the life of whoever says that last bit with a straight face.

Well, you wanted to discuss philosophy and the other thread was getting jacked up. I thought I was helping.

Are you saying that you don't like Plato more than Socrates?

*runs*

Okay then, how about this:

How do you feel about aesthetics? Do you think something can actually be 'so ugly, it's cute'? Is our own perception of beauty something that is fluid, that we can change with time? Is truth really beauty(something I've been pondering, lately)?

Nitpick: It's actually possible to draw some conclusions about Socrates's views versus Plato's views based on differences between Plato's early and later writings.

Here's one to have fun with: What's the difference between an illusory correlation and a real one, in terms of our justification process?

I told my dog to "say something smart."

He just looked at me, shook his head, went to his bed and laid down.

I think I like HIS brand of philosophy.

We see what we want to see when it suits our purposes.

If someone intimidates us, we naturally feel threatened by the things they may say and look for things to dislike about them. We may even relate two things that have nothing to do with each other to make them look bad.

A real correlation would be more like cause/effect.

Oh, that sucks.

I almost did a major fuck up in English last semester. For some reason I had started doing 2 research papers because of something the teacher had said....turns out I wasted half my time researching a new paper that we weren't even doing. Fucking A! Had to go back and bust ass on the original. I hate when shit like that happens.

I'm really bad for shit like that, I check the syllabus multiple times a week to make sure what it is I'm doing or I will get something wrong.

Since I've been back I've managed to avoid fucking up royally, last semester I did bad on a Buddhism paper (that hurt my ego), but a lot of it had to do with just doing a huge paper on Luther the week before, and I didn't have the mental energy. I did very well on my exams and so avoided failing and just fell short of my goal, but again it hurt my ego so bad XD I feel like that prof is going to judge me forever for it now.
