If you have a sweet tooth, red grapes and pomegranates are the way forward (although bear in mind that your body turns fruit into sugar, so vegetables are better if you can wait the cravings out).
If you can only afford one piece of exercise equipment, my personal recommendation would be an exercise bike. The main thing that used to stop me from exercising was finding the time and energy to devote myself to that and only that for any length of time. I find exercising by myself purely to exercise, rather than to play at something, unbearably tedious. However, you can use the bike and read or watch TV, and it doesn't make your joints and back ache like even something as gentle as walking can if you're very overweight. We got ours as a hand-me-down from Mr. Judge's family, but I'm sure you can find a second-hand one knocking about online if you can't afford to buy a new one.
