Yep, they have the re-mastered version available for instant streaming!

<= knows what he's watching later.

Sweet! I just saw that, and added it and the original Nosferatu to my queue.

On that note, I had no idea that there was a "Gothic Industrial" version of Nosferatu; that seems a little unnecessary, like adding Marylin Manson to the original Dracula film...

But a soundtrack created specifically for the film by Type O Negative? Aw, come on ... if you've seen the film before, this gives you a reason to watch it again! Hell, I have that version on DVD.

Hmm...Type O, huh? That might be something checking out, then; Pete's voice makes me melt into a puddle on the floor.

I wonder why they called it "Goth Industrial"; I always figured TON to be more metal than industrial.

Well, because it wasn't someone who had much if any knowledge of the musical scene that did the ad copy featured there. It's odd, because I just pulled the DVD package and on the back cover it reads "Featuring a new soundtrack by rock band Type-O Negative, this version of the film is even more horrifying than the original." The word industrial appears nowhere on the package.

OW! Reading the Netflix details ... the Gothic Industrial version is different.

Quoting one reviewer: "This is not worth your time, unless you like bad, no-name (for a reason) dark wave artists. What can I say, it was done by a guy calling himself "Aleister Einstein" who used entirely too much Ancient Egyptian symbols in his logos. No actual industrial music here... Just bad goth music."

STICK WITH THE ORIGINAL LISTING AT NETFLIX.

No, it was actually pretty funny and a valid point at the same time.

One of those women is a songwriter and a style icon. One is rich and calculating and one is an unfortunate sod who's constantly being exploited by everyone. They each have an image created for the media, but that doesn't make them artificial.

Besides, Tam's point was probably something like "real women have curves" or something else that is an expression of fat guilt.

Actually, it does. Particularly Lady Gaga, who is entirely a character created by some music executives to trick hordes of gullible idiots into thinking they're supporting a legitimate artist. She's the female Andrew WK.

Besides, the joke was clearly referring to metaphorical artificiality, not literal artificiality. Was it the best joke in the world? Of course not, but you'd have to be a pedant of Jillian-Level proportions to think that the fact that they're missing wires and pistons invalidates the comparison.

Unless she did mean it as "real women have curves" 'cause then that's just fat guilt.

She is a musician and songwriter, therefore she's a legitimate artist.

To me it's kind of like saying that because somebody acts differently when they're meeting someone for the first time than they do with family and friends, they're "artificial". It just seems stupid.

I would argue that just because someone does something does not make their work good or worthwhile. Once again they are an artist in the strictist sense, but so is the kindergartener messing around with fingerpaints, or the homeless guy belting out "row your boat". It's not really the same sense of "Artist" as Picasso or Chekhov.

Besides if I'm not mistaken, Lady Gaga has gone on record and admitted her persona is a character, which pretty much necessitates a certain level of artificiality.

That said, it was a cheap rimshot joke. It wasn't even worth the effort that you're making to take issue with it.

Lady Gaga is an artificial construct, Stefani Germanotta is a real musician and songwriter. There is a difference.

So?

Yeah, that's performance art. She has a character she plays onstage and in videos. Pretty sure that doesn't make her, as a person, fake.

Yeah, I get what you mean, though she isn't really known as Stefani Germanotta any more.

But that character which she portrays, and passes off as her own original work, is in all probability a corporate construct engineered with no other purpose besides making money. Thus there is a certain amount of deceit inherent within that character.

By definition, an image created by the media (which is what is represented by those photos) would be artificial. The word CREATE makes it so. You say so.

What's more, that image is created with their permission and the assistance of their agents and promotional entities. It's not unusual for a person in entertainment to have an artificial persona for public displays and performance. They've been doing it for decades.

It's odd that you took so much offense to the concept.

Listen to this man, sybil; he knows what he's talking about. ^_^

Did I mean it as a deep, philosophical judgment on their innermost souls? No, I did not. Did I mean it for a somewhat amusing...if not terribly clever...joke? Yes, I did.

And, just to clarify, this wasn't based on the whole "real women have curves" thing. I think all these women are gorgeous physically [or at least they were in their prime.]

Why -anyone- would take such an obviously silly joke so deadly serious is beyond me. [Bad day, maybe...? O_o]

My guess is that the n00b really likes pop music/culture. There's a guy who I used to room with who would flip out and make similar arguments whenever I said anything derisive about a pop star.

Guy seriously had problems with the fact that I couldn't appreciate the "subtle artistry" of "Disco Stick".
