Concerts ~ The Best and the Worst

So what are some of the BEST shows you have been to?

Who have you seen recently?

Who sucked donkey balls live?

Al and I just went to see the Hazard County Girls open for Hank Williams III

I was totally suprised.

The Hazard County girls rocked hardcore with a nice ' Fuck you I am from the South ' flair.

Hank III did some of his grandaddy's music with a MUCH harder feel, and then in his second set he played his own hardcore punk stuff: Ass Jack!!

Gawdayum!

Who knew a Hank could rock that friggin hard.

I wanted the ' 'I'm Here to Put the Dick in Dixie and Cunt in Country,' T-shirt, but they were sold out.

He had a huge band on stage with him.

One of the guys was playing a bad ass stand-up Bass.

The crowd was sooo diverse, you could tell who came expecting country, and who came to wreak some havoc hardcore style.

All in all it was a really fun show.

Plus the drummer for the Hazard County Girls ( who rocked my remaining ovary) was making doe eyes at Al.

Who I made dance with me.

Then Al got in the pit fpr the Assjack set of Hank's show.

Me and my AMF stayed safely out of the way of that madness.

Ha.

-10 for the drinks being NINE FUCKING DOLLARS A PIECE!!

Those fuckers.

So thats the most recent.

The Best and the Worst still to come.

So cmon you little music monkeys, let's hear it!

Best show I've ever seen: Swans touring for the Great Annihilator. Their live version of "Blood Promise" was one of those religious experiences. Nothing has ever...ever come close.

But if we're going to name other good concerts:

Siouxsie and the Banshees (for Rapture)
Sixteen Horsepower (every time I've seen them live)
Underworld
Sonic Youth (back in the Goo tour, I saw them...five times I think. Every time blew me away)
Fugazi
VNV Nation (who knew that two guys and a DAT machine could be so good.)
Skinny Puppy

...uhh...I had more to say. I am very distracted now. Ahem. Crap, fishnets look nice on a girl.

Bad Concerts:
Every shitty goth band I've seen in a club, save for Switchblade Symphony
Sorrow (had such high hopes about that one)
Siouxsie and the Banshees (one of the reunion tours a few years back, it just blew)
...a buncha other ones that were just...patently mediocre and shouldn't have been.

Well, I guess I just haven't lived as much as most of you wankers!

The only concerst I've been to were Ozzy, about 5-6 years ago.Korn opened for them and sucked ass.How much does Jon Davis think he needs to hump a microphone to make himself sound good? And the group before them, bleh.

Jane's Addiction, the year before last they were in Houston and my husband and I saw them on his b-day.Perry just has an awesome stage presence and Dave is even cuter live than in any magazine. The hubby was severely dissappointed that they only played the more poular songs from any of their albums and none of his faves.

The opening band was Blue October?I thought the neon violin was interesting. The band after that was some band called The Barton Brothers. All I can say is ick, gag and snore!I don't know what these people were trying to, but music isn't their strong point!

I guess I should also mention Bozo Porno Circus! I personally think they rock! The first time I saw them was a few years ago at the Vamipre Ball they have yearly at Numbers. They have girls playing with fire too!

edit:Aesmodeus X was there that year too, but Bozo was better.

Gloria Estefan, with my parents and a friend, for the millenium new year. Worst thing ever. EVER. Gloria Estefan?! How the hell did that happen?

They even got the damn time wrong. I kept checking my watch since the concert was so boring, and so when it finally hit midnight, I expected her to SHUT UP and have the balloons drop as we piss our pants with excitement over a new millenium, blah blah. Nothing happened. Balloons were still in their hammocks, Gloria was still dicking around with Blue Man Group or some shit and I looked around and saw people all over the stadium checking their watches. So we're all pissed off waiting for her to acknowledge this, and then ten minutes or so later, they try and do a Y2K crash fake-out on us, which was simply excruciating. There was a huge screen at the back of the stage, and a virtual bug crawled across it as the lights flickered and went out. "Oh my god, it's the Y2K bug!" Except you're TOO FUCKING LATE BITCH AND THAT IS FUCKING LAME ANYWAYS.

Fuck you, Gloria Estefan. You ruined my millenium. [Yes, MY millenium. Deal with it.] I blame everything on you.

Dirty skank.

What a dirt-bag!

It's bad enough she gets paid ridiculous amounts of money for minimal work, but to ruin someone's millenium? That's pushing it too far!

She must die!

I gotta say...

That although not THE BEST show evaaahhh, seeing Skinny Puppy a few months ago was a long time coming, because I missed them on the Last Rights tour. Little in the way of the 'ol theatrics, but dope as hell, cuz I beez swerved on absinthe... heheheheh...

It exists by eeexxxttrrraaaccctttiiiooonnn...

And I remember the early Babyland shows at Berkeley Square when they were supporting thier first album. Back when they set everything on fire, and shot circular grinder sparks everyfrikkinwhere!

Though all in all, possibly the best show after show ever were the Fiesta Grande shows that Slapaham Records was putting down yearly over at Gilman about ten years ago.

Everyone played, and everyone showed. It gave the Westbay killaz, such as Plutocracy, Spazz, NoLess, Agents of Satan, Evolved to Obliteration, and of course Benumb. And... fuck... everyone I may have left out, a full frontal showcase to shit on the emo bastards that be with an overdose of powerviolent grind.

Pound it down with the others, noteably Man is the Bastard. Even MDC rolled out... and that's WHOA! And that was when The Locust was a young band, and damn did those guys flip lids with the analog onslaught!

If'n you's missed dat shit... pick up a copy of... um... not Frampton. Yeh...

Fiesta Comes Alive!

Blarg.

every concert i've ever been to fucking blew. except 3....

Metallica (odd aint it?), Alice N Chains opened and Tallica played for about 3 hours...brought out a lot of old shit from Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning. Fasta'!

Smashing Pumpkins - Saw the 3rd show on their final tour. It was in this really small old auditorium....maybe 800 seats. They played their first acoustic live set EVER and I got to see it. The electric portion of the show was so good it was stupifying...

Better Than Ezra (forgot about them too huh?)...wow. forgot about this band, and as I was wandering through a local music festival we have here every year, i suddenly heard, "i remember running through the wet grass..." and thought, NO. WAY. So I had to check it out, and sure enough it was them. Luckily i caught them at the beginning of their slot, and got to see them wrap it up with a ballsack blistering cover of Blue Oyster Cult's "Dont Fear The Reaper". That band doesnt get enough credit.

I've only been to two concerts. Metallica which rocked, and then the Curiosa Festival last time the Cure was in SF. The Cure was OK, but the other bands (Mogwai) were awesome.

I am trying to go to Coachella to see all those bands down there in April, like [i]Bauhaus[/u]! O_O

Ice-I hate you too, but it's because the Curosia tour was cancelled before it got up here. To see Interpol, Mogwai, and the "fucking" Rapture open up for the Cure? "Hate" is the verbage I am looking for in describing the feelings I heve for you at this moment. "Hate".....

my fave's

The NY Scum tour (Sonic Youth, the Swans, and Pussy Galore, back when SY was great, and the Swans were all grindy)

Rapeman and the Butthole Surfers (Rapeman was Steve Albini's band with two guys who later formed the Jesus Lizard. BH still had the two drummers and the naked dancers....and the fire shooting all over the place...and a sex-change operation being projected behind them...thank god I didn't dose up beforehand)

Black Flag, Social Distortion, and Gone (the first show I ever went to....well, excluding that damned Credance thing my mom took me to when I was like 4, something I never forgave her for. My love fore music stems from this show, even though Flag got cut off by tear gas canisters and billy clubs swooping down on the crowd)

Social Distortion and the Ramones (I've said it before, and I'll say it again-if you don't have a soft spot in your heart for the Ramones, then you just don't get rock music, period.)

Einsturzende Neubauten (any of the times I've seen them)

Public Enemy and the Sisters Of Mercy (ok, so the Sisters have bad records, but they're great live, and having Public Enemy open up for 'em? Along with the Gang Of Four? All I can say is....wow!)

Hot Hot Heat, Hint Hint, and Wire (HHHeat are supposed to be the hot-shit cool band, but I didn't care too much for 'em, which sucks because they're relly nice guys. Hint Hint, however, were one of the most intense live bands I'd ever seen, and Wire? Well, it's fucking Wire. If you have no clue who they are, then you just have no fucking clue, period.)

Black:Japan and KMFDM (KMFDM makes that totally mechanical disco that's passed off as "industrial" nowadays, but they've been doing it for a while, so I guess that counts for something. Black:Japan, however...well, this is from their website-

"I saw KMFDM in Seattle last night. They, of course were fucking awesome, and one of their openers, Charlie Brown was pretty good too. However, the second band that played, Black Japan...holy shit. I have never heard anything so awful in my life! It was like someone took a drill and stuck in my ear, and ran it so it din't quite go into my brain an kill me, just sat there in my ear and chewed up my stirrup and anvil, and made me want to die. It was absolutly horrendous. I have never booed at a band...but it was certainly warrented for them."

"I was there last night too, Black Japan is the worst band ever, they were laughed at, Heckled, had ice thrown at them and the bouncers tried to tell those of us in the front row to throw our drinks at them to get them off the stage. I think that says it all.....Instead of having a bad ass band like Watts as their first band on KMFDM records they now have this gay orgy known as Black Japan."

"Oh, and Black: Japan opened for KMFDM.......They were the worst opening act I've ever seen. It was like two death metal EMO boys on stage, sampling sounds from their briefcases. Yeah. Sad. It's was ambient noise, and I want my hearing back."

.....remember, anybody who pisses off KMFDM fans this much is doing something right. And what are they doing right? Industrial music, baby, industrial music.)

Low and the Swans (got in for free because I knew Low....my friend had only heard early Swans and hated it. But this was for "The Great Annihilator" tour....let's just say that seeing this show and the Dead Milkmen a week later changed how he goes about making music)

Bumbershoot (Bumbershoot is this yearly four day arts festival up here in Seattle, and it's big time. Over the years I've seen the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, the Violent Femmes, the Treepeople, the Spits, Faith And Disease, the Pixies, Gas Huffer, the Girls, Nancy Sinatra, Reggie Watts, These Arms Are Snakes, Bo Diddley, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Macy Gray, The Shins, Modest Mouse, De La Soul, Kinski, Big Star, John Wesley Harding, Magnetic Fields, Sleater-Kinney, Elliot Smith, the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio, Motorhead, Cab Calloway, Bonnie Rait (with Joan Baez, of all people), Son Volt, Black Eyed Peas, REM......and many many more.....for $15 a day? Holy SHIT, that's a great deal! And it's like this every year)

Capitol Hill Block Party (a much, much, MUCH smaller version of Bumbershoot, but Cap Hill is the San Francisco of Seattle, with it's mixture of hipsters, homos, and culture clash extremis, so the line-up's usually gotten the best of the best of local bands)

Modest Mouse (seeing how big they've gotten always puts a smile on my face, especially considering that the first time I ever saw them, they weren't even 21 yet. How do I know? Well, I "know somebody" who went to the back bar of the Crocodile and got a few beers for them because they were so fucking great. And every time I've seen them, they've never done anything less than amaze me.)

The Spits and Murdock (Murdock's an AC/DC wannabe band from these parts. The kicker? Murdock does AC/DC better than AC/DC has since "Back In Black". And the Spits are the best punk rock band in the world today. 'nuff said.)

The two worst shows I had... well both shows were still awesome but when I saw Babes in Toyland in 95 or so I was trying to fight in the pit with a fever of nearly 104 (the thermometer may have exagerated slightly) and almost passed out so I had to back off and watch from the back and When I saw 16Volt in 96 I got headbutted during 'Motorskill' (my fav song at the time) and my nose broke. I left long enough to stop the blood and then went back in though.

The best show... hmmm hard to say. It was either the first time I saw NIN or the first time I saw KMFDM (both in early 94 I think). Both shows were before the days of barriers so stage diving was ok and the pits weren't glorified fist fights. My first Manson show was great too - Clutch opened and that's what half the crowd was there for - after Clutch the place emptied and the pit area was like a dance floor instead - way neato.

Ooooooh no wait. I've got the best: Crash Worship. All percussion. Very very tribal. At certain points they would strap the drums to their bodies and tape the sticks to their hands and totally leave the stage and play in the crowd. There was also a fire pit in the center and fire breathers throughout. They hung one of the guys from the ceiling and swung him around just over our heads while he played his drums. There were naked chics on huge trays being carried around that were covering us all with wine, water, milk, chocolate syrup and who knows what else. Half way through the show a significant portion of the crowd was half or totally naked and people were dancing in the muck and holding each other so as to not fall down which led to people making out in groups - it was crazy. At one point some very large hairy guy (in retrospect may have been a younger Edible Eye) stuck his tongue in my mouth and... well lets not talk about that. I ran away from it nonetheless and sandwiched some girl I didnt know with some guy I didnt know.

I touched her boobies.

When I got home I peeled my shirt off and laid it on the back of the chair. The next day I pried it off the chair and stood it upright on the table.

Good times.

I had a blast, and glad I had EPS with me.

I hadn't been in the pit in like six years! It was great. I always want to come out of a pit bearing an injury, this was long before Fight Club, so I always throw myself in the middle in hopes of that. Problem is I apparently can hold my own, and in most cases I think people must think I'm crazy and kind of keep away. Like at a Tool concert: I did the "Dances With Wolves" bit where I walked into the middle with my eyes closed, head back, and arms out hoping to get a decent gash upon my noggin, but nothing, I opened my eyes, and I swear it was like I shit my pants (I checked, no) cause I had a yard radius clearing around me. ANYWAY at the Hank III concert I made my way into what I wanted to be the middle, but ended up in the front. I look up, and there is Hank III looking down at me, and he must have seen the look of shock on my face because I felt like I was looking at his granddaddy...and he winked!!

EPS I didn't care that the AMF's were $10, the roofies were more than that! ^_^

Other than that, best concerts...first Tenacious D, when they first came out. I thought I was their only fan, until I got to the sold out show and saw the whole crowd knew every song and knew where to clap. I met Kyle's parents running the tshirt table!

I once went to a concert with System of A Down (fuck their politics), Megadeath, Static X, and Rob Zombie. The Zombie pit was scary, actually, back when I could actual get scared, because it was so crowded you had to aim yur head upward to breathe, and that was thanks to Rob asking the whores on guy's shoulders to come toward the stage, thereby crushing us. That and the pyrotechnics shot out heat that made it worse.

Worst concert? Red Hot Chili Peppers...but STP opened for them and rocked so fucking hard they set a bar that the Peppers could not match. They knew it, and walked off the stage early. Fuck em.

The best concert I've been to was Cradle of Filth in Budapest, 26th June, 2004. Its my first real concert and it was fuckin' awesome. I remember being barely able to walk after all those moshing.

The worst concert of a big band I've seen was Katatonia in Budapest, on 10th March 2005. I saw and heard them for the very first time and they sucked monkey balls. Those guys sounded and looked like a cheap teenage nerd band.

Praise the lord Apocalyptica & Cradle of Filth came afterwards.

Geez, Giga... sorry, dude. I can only say I hope you've heard their albums and like them better, cuz Katatonia is an amazing band, and they deserve a second chance. I've never seen them live, but am totally open to the idea that they might suck. I once busted my ass travelling to see them at the Hole In The Sky metal festival, but didn't get there in time. Maybe for the best, then...

Ok, so my best concert experiences? I'm gonna be a clichè and put Tool pretty high up on the list. Roskilde festival 2001. Obviously I was stoned out of my mind. In spite of being incredibly thirsty through the whole thing, (I knew I wouldn't be able to find my friends again if I went for a beer) it just rocked my brain in all kinds of direction. I felt like I was hovering on a cloud over the crowd, hearing every detail in the music, just total oblivion. Amazing.

To include a (much) smaller gig - Juno - at a beautiful club called Blue in Oslo, was fantastic. Not a whole lot of people there, but the band just had this amazing energy. 3 guitars, each one lifting the songs in both subtle and outright pummeling ways, into the stratosphere. Extremely capable drummer. And Arlie Carsten's gravelly voice and complex lyrics making the impact devastating.

There are many more concerts that are worth a mention - Nick Cave, Legendary Pink Dots, Le Tigre, Violent Femmes, Appleseed Cast, Machine Head - but the impressions are hard to sort out.

I haven't been to too many concerts, but the best one I ever went was The cruxshadows show. The leader singer is an excellant preformer! He actually gets into the audience and dances around with his fans. All while singing. They also have dancers. The club I went to was too small to have there though. But either way the show was phenominal>

I generally don't like most of the newer bands out there but they kick ass! If you wanna check them out, copy and paste this link:

Well, I have seen Bauhaus live, in Brixton, London 1998. It was one of the best concerts I've been to. However, I am envious of a friend who saw them live in Athens in 1981!!! Meh, you can't have everything.

Another great show was, surprisingly, The Misison, again in London, I think it was 1999.

VNV Nation rawked in Athens a couple of years back, while their London concert in, I think, 1999 sucked. Apoptygma Berzerk on the other hand were great in London and sucked in Athens.

Depeche Mode in Wembley Arena, London 2001 were amazing. Fad Gadget who opened for them were awful.

Diary of Dreams. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G in both shows I've attended, both in Athens.

The Fun Lovin' Criminals. What can I say? I've seen them live 4 times, and they always RAWK. Multiple orgasms caused by watching Huey Morgan do his thang added an extra pleasure, of course.

The Cure, London Astoria 2000 if I remember correctly. Small venue, great show. They played 100 Years and it felt like we were in the 80s again. Also in Athens, 1996, but that concert was not that great.

Dead Can Dance in Athens, waaaay back. Dreamy.

The Smashing Pumpkins played very well in Athens 1997 (?) and the Cramps... oh The Cramps.... Poison Ivy rawks! (Athens 1997)

I've also seen Siouxsie and The Banshees in Athens 1998 but it was a terrible concert. She was bored to death and it was like she was doing us a favour and we should be so thankful that she was standing there.

Another disappointing concert was Death in June in London 1998. Too much percussion for my taste.

There were more but I can't remember them at the moment. I am not 100% sure for most of the dates I mention... sorry. I keep all the tickets though, so maybe I'll go check and list them properly.

Oh! my very first concert was... ta da! Simply Red in 1992 I believe...
I definately lose goth points for that.

Death was dissapointing? I would give my left nut to be able to see the mighty Chuck Schuldiner and Co. in concert! Unfortunately he died Dec. 13, 2002 of complications stemming from a rare form of brain cancer. And simply red is simply AWESOME. Dont let anyone pick on you for it!
