Oscar Wilde

In my opinion one of the greatest authors who've ever walked the Earth. Just recently I bought (and read cover- to- cover) his only novel, "The Picture of Dorian Grey" and was absolutely fascinated by it. Has anyone else read it (or any other of his stories/ plays)? What do you think of it/them/him?

I absolutely adore him!
He's visited my dreams more than once. I have to say, though, that besides Dorian, I haven't read much about him.
But, what can I say about him? He's a genius!
The Picture of Dorian Grey remains as my favorite book of all times.

I agree about The Picture of Dorian Grey. Oh my goth, it was a fascinating read.

I also strongly recommend his play, Importance Of Being Earnest. In the version of the play I saw just two guys were acting out all the parts, even the female roles.

Wow, that's impressing! I've only seen half of the movie version, you know, the one with what's-his-name Grant (nobody seems to play Wilde's plays up here ). I'd love to see it on stage, though...

Everything he's ever written is amazing.

Not to mention Monty Python made a great sketch about him.

I have recently bought a book of his which consisted of "The Picture of Dorian Grey" and other works of his, but I have yet to get around to reading it. What a shame.. school forces me to read within such a limited standard, and I have little time for anything else.

^That's disturbing.

Anyway, I've bought "The Importance of Being Earnest", and read it while sitting at the local coffee shop this very afternoon. People looked strangely at me because I couldn't keep from giggling as I was reading. This play is absolutely marvellous ;D

I love 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. Sadly, that's the only one of Wilde's works I've been able to get my hands on. I'd love to read more from him.

My sentiments exactly. My favorite panties say "Oscar Wilde is my Jesus" on them. Too much information, I 'spose, but so true!

An amazing find...

I squealed like the fangirl I am when I found the antique, large hardcover edition of The Picture of Dorian Gray for only eight dollars at Half Price Books.

Has anyone ever seen it? There's an artist preface by Basil Hallward, along with some gorgeous illustrations, all signed "Hallward." Such an amazing find!

I'd never heard of the artist (Basil) preface before, has anyone here heard talk of it before?

One could wish that Oscar had chosen to spend more time writing, so that we could presently enjoy more of his melancholy fairy tales and haunting novels. But then we’d miss out on his brilliant “bon mots” and flamboyant lifestyle. Oscar’s life was his true art, and his plays, poetry and stories mere byproducts. I love to read his works, it’s as if his words echo from the grave. Last December I was in Paris standing at Wilde's small plot of land in Pere Lachaise. I listened intently yet heard nothing. Alas.

Oscar Wilde was one of the most talented and diverse writers in history. He wrote poetry with brilliant, aesthetic images, gaining him association with the aestheticist movement. He wrote one of the most famous pieces of Gothic fiction, his only novel, in fact, with enough social commentary on the wealthy of England to have gotten him in some serious trouble were it not for the fact that the story was portrayed as outright fantasy through use of Dorian's magical portrait. (H.G. Wells, on an almost related note, did the same with most of his "science fiction" work; make it "fantasy" to prevent social criticism of radical beliefs.) Then he wrote many witty, ingenious essays that revived a dull, dead, soulless genre to popularity that has lasted until this day. His letters were among the first to be considered literary and enjoyable enough to be worthy of publishing. His knack for humour, especially satire and irony, are almost unparalleled to this day (The Importance of Being Earnest is Irony codified into a play).
Reading the journals kept of his last days can fill even the most homophobic of readers (see: Dave Simms love of Oscar Wilde even after he went batshit and decided women, homosexuals, and the internet were satan's earthbound manifestations) with love and admiration for the man, and someone with no prejudice against homosexuals can begin to idolize him. Few men have been so passive and humerous about their own passing as to speak upon their deathbed "Those curtains go or I do," moments before dying.
Best. Last. Words. Ever.

Oscar Wilde was a genius, his life, his work, everything about him is fascinating. He is indeed a writer who deserves the acclaim he has. Here is the statue I often like to visit of him:

Tongue? Looks like a pipe to me.

I love everything about that sculpture! The relaxed, yet playful positioning of the feet, the look on his face, the way it looks like he just climbed up on a rock to chill out and think about stuff--it all calls to me!

I *MUST* go to Ireland just to take a photo with it!

...

They probably won't let me, though...

Wait... IS it in Ireland? If not... where is it?
