Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Does this Punk Genre exist?
Emotive Oi.
Does it? Discuss. IF it doesn't, how do you think it would sound?

You should have submitted to that notion to the oxymoron thread, you might have posted the first phrase, of all those which emerged in the course of that discussion, to actually contain a contradiction in terms.
Oi is inherently communal music, a movement as much as a genre, its message a call for unity in the hope of achieving of political aims. Emotive hardcore, on the other hand, is fundamentally the opposite-- the lyrics are intimate intimate and personal; contemplative and sad where Oi is brutal and angry.
I suppose theoretically the closest thing to emotive Oi would be some sort of 'commiseration front', bands who declare "WE'VE ALL HAD OUR HEARTS BROKEN AND AS LONG AS WE DRAW BREATH THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ANYONE EVER AGAIN". I feel this would be truly sickening.

I can just see it:
She tore my heart away from me
But screw the system, we need to be free
The girl of my dreams just dumped me last night
But this won't happen again, I'll stand up and fight!

Sadly, to a whole crap load of people, emo and punk (as well as goth) are all synonymous. And Hot Topic already has its hands all over it.
If they were all combined it'd probably be something like:
In the flat field I cry to my girlfriend about the government doing us wrong.

Haha a serious version would be:
She tore my heart away from me
The System no longer leaves me free
Broken heart in government chains I weep tonight
I'll wipe my tears, get to my feet, and I will fight tonight

He's the king!
King of the skins!
What's his name?
Black violet of melancholy longing.
... Methinks Emotive Oi! is a bad idea.

If this genre did exist, I drag it out to the street and shoot it myself. This talk is blasphemy! How dare you think a great genre of Oi is mixed with the shitty shitty genre of emo. Also generally Oi is full of skinheads who'd gladly beat the shit out of anyone who isn't a skinhead.

I dont know much about punk, but from what I do know, the term "emotive oi!" does sound quite contradictory. Oi! seems to be light hearted and all involved seem to be "out for a good time" (having said that, by no means is it mindless music). Emotive hardcore on the other hand is very deep and personal. I dont know, I just couldnt see it working.

Ah the hilarity that would be emotive Oi! It makes me picture skinheads weeping.
God I hope it never exists...

Are you guys sure we're talking about the same emotive hardcore?
Honestly, I was wondering if there was a genre of punk that had the sounds of say, Rites of Spring and Beefeater with the sounds of oi.
Read up on Revolution Summer. You gotta respect a group of artists that can change their scene into a less violent and criminal thing.

On what grounds, SoD? To not like something is one thing, but to hate something? For what? Because a shit load of mallpunks like to run around calling themselves emo? I dunno, I'm just going by the concensus.

Maybe hate is too strong of a word. How about SEVERELY dislike? I've listened to some of the music, Heroin, Rites of Spring, didn't like it, too poppy and nice, I like feedback and noise. Plus, when these kids don't know shit about what real emo is, it just pisses me off.
I'm in a bad mood today, thanks to comments made by a person today, sorry if I come across harsh.
