Some of the stuff I've heard they've had to put up with made my blood boil. One young woman was made fun of while growing up in Georgia because her maiden name was Shotwithtwoarrows and her grandmother's maiden name was Whetstone. She had far more tolerance than I could ever dream of having.

Yeah, pretty much squeezed as much care as I have out on this subject. You can call it a win if you want.

That really disappoints me. This is very important for a lot of people and I feel like important things should have clear and definitive dimensions within a community so there's no confusion.

Well, now I have to either chose between believing that you will argue about something important only so far as you feel like at the time and may not commit to resolving what you say, or that you will continue to believe something regardless of your ability to argue for it.

Both scenarios bother me and they don't exactly give me, and I imagine a few of the others, much of a reason to talk about anything with you if you won't even go the distance or at least admit when your argument doesn't cut it for the time being.

What's the point if you won't contribute back, you know?

We both see problems with society, I think cutting the wealth disparity at the knees will give more people better and faster opportunities to improve their lot in life. I see racial injustices as either stemming from economic factors or as failures of individuals and not necessarily as evidence of a corrupt system. I think a racist dickhead is evidence of a racist dickhead, and not proof of institutional policy.

We can go back and forth while I ignore the occasional catcalls from the sidelines a little further, or I can recognize a stalemate when I see one. I'm not going to convince you, you're not likely to convince me, I fail to see what good will come out of belaboring that point.

There are other things to read about and discuss. Feel free to engage or not.

I'll go get the ice. SMDH....

Anyway. I've got to say that I'm also rather disappointed. The fact that Jon thought that what Versus wanted was a victory is just NOT what this was all about.

You see; Versus is giving out the medicine and Jon is opting out for homeopathic solutions.

Clearly Jon would rather be drinking tea to cure his ills instead of using the medicine that God fucking gave him.

How do you figure racism stems from classism when racism in America predates America? That racism predates capitalism? That we were slaughtering aboriginals way before the dollar system, and poor white folks like us seriously enjoyed coming to this continent because we could pick on people of colour and enjoy authority over them?

How can you say a system set up to protect the interests of the wealthy you claim you want to cut down isn't corrupt?

There is no stalemate with racism. You can go on with your life not caring about people of colour just fine, I could do the same if I so choose. But people of colour do not have that arrogance or privilege. This is why PoC don't trust us white allies.

Yeah, I'm on skype with him and I said "Miss Absynthe wants to know if you're in university". He laughed and was like "I have a GED!"

I'm the least educated person on this forum, by far. I cut class or was sick a lot during school, and my adult education is only stuff that relates to my job. :/

@Saya - I only ask because I'm in the middle of my second (and a half) degree, and the way he writes would shame pretty much every single academic that I have come in contact with.

@Versus, write a fucking book or something.

I'm actually really apprehensive about going to school when I get out. I want to, but at the same time, it's just not really my element.

And thank you, that's really kind to say.

I tell him the same thing, and then he goes and breaks my heart by saying he wants to go get a science degree instead of pwning the faculty of arts.

Because I'm not going to pay for university like some chump. Or a white kid. Possibly both.

@Versus - I can totally understand your apprehension.

The way that the higher education system is here (well, when I was young..), you went straight to Uni after finishing high-school, which meant that everyone there was about 18 years old and most were still living with their parents. I was 22 when I started my first degree (BA - theatre major), and just those couple of years made a huge difference to the way that I could(n't) relate to the people around me.

When I went back to start my second degree (BNursing), I was in my mid-30's and had already been a nurse for most of my life.. the system has changed slightly, so that people have to take a gap ear after high-school and that means that most Uni students are now 19 and have worked in retail and flatted with friends for a year. Again.. huge gap between my experience and theirs.. and even my experience having worked on the wards and the experience of my lecturers who had spent their years teaching about nursing and not actually wiping bums and holding hands. It got SO annoyingly frustrating that I ended up giving up.

I am 38 now, and am back at Uni again to do a BSocSc - I started off with a double major in psychology and justice studies but just can not hack the psychology side of it all - for the same reasons again... I am in a class of 19 year olds who just have no concept of the reality of the ideas that they are regurgitating.. and it makes me too sad to listen to them.

If you go back to school you *will* be out of your element.. but oh, the places you'll go!

I wish I had the discipline and patience to get a science degree.

I'm a theater major.
