Speaking as a student midwife and a mother, abortion needs to be kept legal for the safety and well-being of women. As has been mentioned, women will seek to terminate unwanted pregnancies regardless of what the law says. So keeping it legal ensures safe procedures. Secondly, some pregnancies are doomed from the beginning and allowing them to be carried out to term would be cruel. For example, if a foetus tests positive for anencephaly, terminating is a mercy. Otherwise, the child will die an agonising death shortly after being born. Is it really right to let a woman go through a pregnancy knowing that her baby cannot survive, give birth to that child, and then have it die in her arms within minutes?
Abortion is heart-breaking. No woman goes down that path frivolously or with joy in her heart. And any girl who thinks she can use it as a form of birth control will be met by a very rude awakening once she's in the thick of the experience. 'Pro-choice' does not mean 'pro-abortion'; it means pro-sanity, pro-safety, pro-mercy.
