If you can delete one word from the english dictionary, what would it be?
I think it is pretty obvious that you post the one word you hate in English and wish to erase it from the whole language.
Mine is: Love.

And the point of this is .......?

If you can delete a word, what would it be and WHY is the more important thing, I would suggest.
Saying you'd delete "love" and not saying anything else just appears trite- a failed attempt to look lonely, deep or misanthropic.
I'd rather delete a term like ni**er. The word is used viciously, exclusively and almost always to someone's detriment. When used by non-blacks, it is considered offensive and derogatory. When used by black individuals, even in the context of 'taking it back' for empowerment, it is used to the exclusion of others on a racial rather than cultural basis. The word has no positive or even genuinely useful use. It is not elegant, descriptive, functional. When used negatively, it is vicious and harks back to a time that should no longer exist. When used positively, it's still used to set a group apart and deny all others on the basis of birth.
Other words could be removed under the same reasoning- "Paki" is a word that no one except racist scum need.
But I'd never actually advocate removing a word. All words exist. The sign of your personality, intelligent and ethical choice is in how you use them.

Dear God! I'm terribly sorry, I didn't mean it to sound like this, you see I do not believe in love at all, that is what I meant by saying love, because to me it is meaningless.
Alright, why, it should be real interesting for that one.
- I am sure that this post answers the question why I choose that word.
Anything out of that, I apologize. I had no intention of doing anything you or whoever would reply to this thread that would be inappropriate whatsoever.

Sorry to derail your thread, but in fairness it was fairly obtuse anyway so I'm not sorry, but I want you to elaborate on what you mean by not believing in love. Starting now.

You don't get laid much, do you?
Anyway, I say pretty much the same thing as Delkaetre said. As languages evolve, certain words get replaced, and the cycle just goes on and on...

If we get rid of "love", it would really take the impact out of certain phrases.
The porn industry and indeed the heat of passion between couples might take a severe blow without the use of "oh god, I love your *bodypart*". Replacing it with "I really really like your *bodypart*" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
So even if you don't believe in romantic love, spare a thought for the industry of lust instead.

I don't believe in love as in love between sexes, as pointed out by Delkaetre.
Love exists in families, perhaps.
But when it comes to a sexual romantic love relationship between two humans, it only orbits around Lust, obsession, addiction and desire.
To me, these things, apart from obsession and addiction, are not humanitarian, it's barbarian.
Ending that, I apologize again if you are one to love looking high and mighty -No offence intended- and seeing that I am still a child and might be ignorant makes probably the older the better to hear out.
Thank you Sinjob for playing along. (///.^)

So.... you wouldn't delete the actual word, just a couple of definitions.

Thats a very particular type of love and we have a word for that kind already, infatuation.

No problem at all. Prude is really a word we must get rid of entirely.

Mine is: hate
I don't mean to come across as hippy-ish, I'm just so sick of people never being able to get along with one another. If we didn't have hate, we wouldn't have wars, everything would be peaceful, and people who don't really fit in with the majority wouldn't need to be afraid to walk out their front door.

Getting rid of the word won't erase hate. Are you really that naive?

Twilight.
This otherwise very nice and sophisticated word has been worn thin by a horrible sexual wannabe vampire novel series.
The very word Twilight brings up the hate and the urge to kill in me.

Probably Avante Garde (sp). It's such a pretentious word that merely hearing it makes me have rage fits.

A world without constant "*facepalm*"-ing is a world I wouldn't mind living in.
