A New Baby

My mother is going to have a baby in the next week or so, and I am so worried cause my mom is older than the average pregnant woman. They say you are not supposed to have children after 33 or something and my mom is 37. I don't just want to sit here and worry all the time but I can't help it.

What have the doctors told her?

... My aunt had a baby when she was 40 and she was fine...

And oh, congratulations ^_^

Have you told her you are worried about her? If it helps, lots of women are not even starting families until their late 30's - early 40's these days with no problems.

The doctors said that she was healthy enough for a child, but that it was still a risk. She is supposed to go into labor any day now.

It's a girl ^_^

Your mother should be fine.

But babies are horrible.
I'm sorry for your gain.

My grandma had my Mother and Aunt at 16 and 17 and then had my Uncle at 37. Really as age goes on, you're right, it's not as healthy, but it's even LESS healthy in their 40's because they are preparing for menopause. The hospital will take good care of her.

She didn't have the tests done. The doctor said that it wasn't really necessary.

My mom had me when she was 39. My husband's mom had him when she was in her late 30's as well, and he's perfectly healthy in every way.

Unless your mom drinks, smokes, or does drugs, I'm sure your new little sister will be fine. More parents are having babies later in life, so I don't know where the 33 thing comes from. :P

There was a 71 year old woman who had twins or something like that... Ok possibly a few years younger, but still able to recieve pensions I'm sure!!
If a woman is older there is an increased risk of complications, but they mean in the late forties usually.

Little sisters are great ^^, much preferable to a little brother who rugby tackles you when you're pouring a boiling hot cup of tea without a lid on the kettle so the water goes all over your hand, then you scream in utter agony whilst assaulting him with a teaspoon for the next fifteen minutes before tripping over a chair and jarring your knee
...
That was not a good day.

That isn't true.

The tests are elective tests anyway, and doctors only strongly recommend it if your baby is at high risk.

My congratulations to her. She's not the only one having a baby. My wife goes into delivery this Thursday.

Actually, they recommend the tests to most women these days because risk of defects increases with maternal age. The triple is done in the uk to determine level of risk. Although with multiple pregnancies the results arent accurate anyway and a lot of women dont have an amnio because of risk such as miscarriage or premature labour.

That's not a guarantee. My mom supposedly had hers tied...and then hey ho! She got pregnant with me. XD

There's only a couple of very sure ways to not get pregnant:

1. Have all your or your partner's reproductive organs taken out.

2. Never have sex with someone of the opposite sex.

3. Only have the kind of sexual relations that don't involve semen entering the vagina.

Tam Li Hua < She really did have hers done [correctly]. My parents, before the seperation, had sex after I was born up until the seperation and no pregnancy ever occured.

My mother had my brother past the recommended age (I won't say how for beyond though since she is sensitive about her age) and he didn't have any birth defects.

Birth defects are incredibly rare and most are detectable on ultra sound, normally in early scans. Here, thats 20wks or earlier. Was a woman here in her 60's i think, dont quote me on it though, had IVF and had a baby. Was all over the papers, and babys fine. I do think worrying when shes due to drop any day, is a bit OTT though, when shes had kids before and got this far. Worst thing will be the crying through the night and smelly nappies!

I think that is when my mom is going to go into labor. If she doesn't have the baby this week they want to induce her next Friday.

Is it a boy or girl?
