Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Live videos don't count, asshole.
I can't be bothered finding a link, but Rabbit In Your Headlights by U.N.K.L.E. and pretty much all of the Aphex Twin videos.

A good music video is about a person's interpretation of a piece of music.
There is no interpretation in catching a band play with your handcam.

I'm sure you guys have already seen most of my favorites, since they're not obscure, but since I love talking about why I like stuff I thought I'd mention them.
Tubeway Army's "Down in the Park" on Old Grey Whistle Test in 1979. This song's been covered so many times but nobody can beat Numan's emotional detachment and cold synth sound.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1EUxGZQoDU
Joy Division's "Shadowplay" on Granada Reports/Granada Television in 1978. Another song that has spawned inferior covers. I think this is their 1st time on TV. Deborah Curtis said in her book that it wasn't the band's idea to project the B&W cars driving over the set but notice how well it works with the mood. Whoever thought of it was a genius.

Trent Reznor and Peter Murphy's "Bela Lugosi's Dead". I really like this version even though I think Reznor sold out years ago and Murphy looks like a cross between Jack Nicholson and Neil Young or some 70s coke dealer. Watch how Reznor tries so hard to look tough and menacing like he's belting out some heavy metal song and how casually Murphy steals the stage just by lighting a cigarette and walking around.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8W4tslqVSg
Death In June's "The Calling". This is actually a homemade video some chick made from her vacation photos but it's excellent. Her photos are very atmospheric.

Sopor Aeternus' The Goat. A simple song and a cheap video but still achieves amazing results. The traditional funeral march has never been so creepy.

I would have included The Sisters of Mercy's "Lucretia" and Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" but Viscus already did. I also wish there was an official video for "Bela Lugosi's Dead other than that crappy clip from The Hunger.

Love or hate Muse, the Knights of Cydonia video is awesome. If I made films, I would want to make a sci-fi western in the same vein. The only thing missing is a Yojimbo-style samurai.

I had a girlfriend that had the same symptoms. She introduced me to type o negative. I've caught them in concert every tour since.

I saw Numan perform this live.
It was amazing.
You heard the Christian Death cover?

Did you even watch the video? Trent is just standing there. I mean he's ripped so I guess that's what you mean by 'trying to look tough' but Peter Murphy doesn't just light a cigarette and walk around. He carries a bowl of ROSE PETALS and begins to ANOINT the other band members with them. That's a bit more than casual.

Eclipsing the Son < Every Type O song gets me that way. Never fails--especially when I'm high and can just lay there and listen to his voice and words. *Drool*
To show my love for Type O, my 2nd tatto will be the Type O Negative symbol above my right breast.

Type O Negative is fun, but not really great. Like HIM or 69 Eyes, their thing tends to get old quickly.

I disagree. Type o Negative is a lot more tongue in cheak, artsy and rock a lot harder than both those bands. HIM is pretentious to me. People actually believe in what he does as a serious deal. 69 eyes is more hollywood grime and filthmongering
Type O Negative hit that perfect combination of good music, integrity and cleverness. They also show a lot more variety from album to album.
Have you heard their new album??? I had kind of lost hope in them but Dead Again brings me back to when Bloody Kisses came out.

viscus < To each their own, actually.
I have been listening to the same exact Type O Negative songs over and over again for over a year now and have yet to find them to be "getting old." Not everyone has the same music preference as you, keep that in mind.
