Or igloos.

Or seal clubbing.

Or oil spills.

Or.... Ok I'm out of Newfie references for now.

It's easy. I've done it once. Reinvented myself completely when I walked out on a former life - drove across the country (and she's a big one), started a new life for myself. Left all the material things behind. Have been practicing detachment and controlling my desires for about 10 years.. But I'll say this, when the desires hit, man they hit hard.

human minds are capable of a lot of strength when needed.

Colorado is full of white hippies and rednecks.

Young professionals and NYU students annoy me more than hipsters.

Not to mention that NY is the only city I can think of off hand that can actually make you feel like you've gone to another country by just taking a train ride. Get on the A and between 42nd and 155th, I become a minority and my home speaks mostly Spanish or Dominican. It's very refreshing. Also, people tend to be friendly AND mind their own business.

New York. Best city in the whole world.

That could describe Dallas, Seattle, Chicago, or any city with a good ethnic population. Don't get the illusion that NY is special in that regard.

Dude...you have absolutly no concept of what you're talking about.

It's freaking New York. It's immigrant central, and the arts and cultural mecca of the world.

I have lived in 5 different state, 2 countries, and 5 different major cities. I've toured europe, and walked across the Eastern Seaboard.

Never have I encountered a place like New York.

This city is THE city (and is regarded as such). It is the greatest city in the world, bar-none. You could live here your entire life, and go somewhere new every day, and still not experience everything this place has to offer.

Chicago's cool and all, and I'm sure Colorado is nice, (I've heard good things about the Huston indy-film scene) but there's really no comparison.

You can mention those cities, but NYC is at the top. Despanen's right.

You just don't like New York 'cuz you got robbed or mugged or something. Which also can be said about any city.

Alot of people have an irrational fear of NYC. When I was getting ready to move here all I heard was: "Don't go to New York! You'll be killed! You'll live in a closet! Everything will cost ten-million dollars and you'll sleep on a bed of hooker-corpses!" Kontan was told the same thing: "You'll be mugged! You'll never see sky EVAR AGAIN! You'll turn into a corporate slave!GNIAAAAAA!!!!"

Honestly though, I'm kinda glad. If so many people weren't afraid to live here property costs would be even higher than they are now.

I don't have an irrational fear of it, I've never been mugged there, I know it's an art and cultural center, I just don't like the city. I don't like the people, I don't like the look of the city. Chicago's architecture is a hell of a lot more interesting (as far as my tastes go), the public art is incredible, the people aren't all assholes, the public transportation is better, we've got a cooler skyline, we've got cooler sports teams, we've got better everything really, as far as I'm concerned.

And you know the really funny thing Despanen? I've been to New York several times. Yet, your single argument is that I'm "irrational, and don't know what I'm talking about" when I say I like Chicago more.

Sorry mate. I'll either stay out West, or go home to Chi-Town.

You know what, it's really kind of exhausting to engage fully with you on the merits of your ideas about NY. So I'll just say you're wrong because you are. Chicago is not better than NYC. Chicago is a respectable close second. Don't worry, Chicago is still relevant.

Wait...so you've "visited several times"? What did you do? walk around time square and see the sights? Dude, of course you thought people were assholes. You're a tourist. Everyone hates tourists. You sound like my buddies from Kentucky who've visited here: "People are assholes and there's nowhere to park my truck" It's bullshit. If you have such "inside knowlege" of New York, why are all your ideas about it objections to stereotypes? You sound like your opinion of NYC comes from watching Ghost Busters 2.

Honestly dude, you jumped into a discussion about New York and started trallin' it with "Fuck New York!" and now you're saying: "I don't like it and I never will" that's not something someone says when they're being rational about something. Those are things that scream of you covering your ears and going: "LALALALALALALA!"

Gothicus: Yeah, he's lived here for over two months.
